1 Jan 45
Weather still mild with a little rain. The boat arrived at 1300 hrs bringing mail, lumber and oil stove. All was unloaded but the stove. New Year's dinner, turkey with trimmings, was served in the Mess Hall at 1700 hrs. Mr & Mrs Kinnear and children were present. Show, "The Crystal Ball", was enjoyed in the evening. Afterthe show a sing-song was enjoyed in the Canteen around the piano. Suitable refreshment was an added attraction. Canteen was closed during the afternoon for stock taking.
2 Jan 45
Weather dull with light rain and little wind. Canteen remained closed until final check was made. F/O Murray and LAC Illman worked most of the day making up the December statement. Airmen were delegated to collect all empty bottles. During the evening "Crystal Ball" was again shown in the Rec Hall.
3 Jan 45
Continued dull weather. Canteen statement completed and typewritten. Orderly busy with routine preparation of mail for the boat is due soon. Remaining month end reports completed.
4 Jan 45
Dull and cool with little wind. Boat arrived 1450 hrs bringing lumber for plank road. 4 bags of mail and oil stove, which could not be unloaded as swell too great. Bernie Knipe, YMCA representative, arrived bringing magazines and ashtrays for canteen. Christmas gifts from Women's auxiliary RCAF arrived. Meeting of Canteen Committee was held 1800 hrs to discuss canteen business.
5 Jan 45
Weather still dull with light rain. 500 gallon oil storage tank for new kitchen stove was installed behind Mess Hall. Cpl Real and Cpl Henderson prepared WA gifts to be distributed Saturday evening. Routine normal. Inspection 1400 hrs. Rehearsals for music to be used Saturday evening held in Recreational Hall. LAC MacAdam made very fine microphone from crystal earphone.
6 Jan 45
Weather dull and cool without rain. Daily routine normal. In evening YMCA man supervised a combined Quiz and musical evening. In view of the fact that this was our first experiment in this direction, the result was satisfactory, although evening program was too long. After Quiz program personnel went to the Mess Hall where lunch was served including remaining Christmas confection and WA contribution.
7 Jan 45
Weather brisk and cool with brighter skies. No unusual occurrences. During afternoon Canteen Committee had a meeting with YMCA man to discuss general program of entertainment and to consider possibility of buying a lathe for woodwork. During evening a devotional service was conducted by Mr Knipe of YMCA at which suitable music was played and CO gave a talk on his philosophy of living. Mr and Mrs Kinnear and family were invited to dinner at the Mess.
8 Jan 45
A very dull day with heavy rain and hail in late evening. F/O Murray and LAC Macadam commenced reorganization of stock in Emergency Ration Hut. It was found that rats were still playing havoc with the supplies and that many articles would have to be thrown away. F/O Murray and Mr Knipe had dinner at the Lighthouse.
9 Jan 45
Weather cool, dull, sea calm, with a little light rain. Cpl Brabant and LAC Scott cleaned DOT storage shed at the dock. LAC Scott repaired M418, one of our rowboats. A heavy plank floor was placed in the hoist house to make operative service safer, as footing very insecure on rocks. Stove in dock house was moved and a new pipe was placed through the roof.
10 Jan 45
Dull cool weather, without rain and fairly calm sea. Routine normal in orderly room. F/O Murray, Cpl Brabant & LAC MacAdam returned to ration hut to complete the repiling of the cases of emergency rations. Cartons and cans which were damaged or not intact were placed aside for sorting and shelving.
11 Jan 45
Dull, cool with fairly strong wind. Boat arrived 1430 hrs carrying more planks, mail and canteen supplies. It was decided not to attempt to unload the oil stove. The boat returned to Henslung Bay for the night. A gale was reported in the vicinity. Mr Knipe of YMCA and LAC Scott (Seaman) left on today's boat. Movie "Swing Shift Maisie" was shown in the canteen at 2000 hrs.
12 Jan 45
Weather dull and cool with wind fairly high all day, assuming gale proportions during evening. Morning work was routine. In the afternoon work in the ration hut was completed. There was a CO's inspection of all personnel and barracks at 1500 hrs. All other buildings were included. Telephone call was placed to WAC regarding the power situation this Unit as many fuses are being blown on the panel in the Diesel Hut. Assurance was received that action would be expedited. Nimpkish returned to Massett. Movie "Swing Shift Maisie" was repeated at 2000 hrs.
13 Jan 45
Extremely high wind of gale proportions. Sea very rough. Continuous threat of falling trees all day. At 1100 hrs a tree behind BB#3 crashed, but fortunately missed the corner of the building. A swinging branch somewhere between camp and operations kept shorting the primaries, thus blowing fuses. At 1630 hrs a tree between the Guard Hut and Operations site fell severing all primaries and telephone lines. As wind extremely high at this point, pole work was impossible. Therefore repairs had to be left until morning.
14 Jan 45
Wind considerably subsided. Temporary repairs were effected, rendering all lines serviceable by 1700 hrs. Boat arrived 1430 hrs bringing nine men and several films. Morale is high! "Madame Curie" enjoyed at 2000 hrs.
15 Jan 45
Weather bright and clear during day. At 1930 hrs heavy rain and hail fell. Routine normal. Cpl Somerville and LAC Byron continued to work improving telephone lines. Show "Hi Diddle Diddle" was enjoyed in the afternoon and evening performances. Rehearsals for coming show were held in the Canteen at 1800 hrs.
16 Jan 45
Weather cool with intermittent rainfall. Morning was spent in routine administration. Arrangements were made to commence painting the stationary part of the gantry at operations. Rehearsal for the Variety Show was held during afternoon. It was decided to form a quartet composed of Cpl Real, LAC Phillips, Cpl Bird, and F/O Murray. Four numbers were rehearsed for the Saturday show. UBC shorts were shown in the Canteen during the evening.
17 Jan 45
Cool without rain. Routine normal. Show "Whistling in Brooklyn" shown in Rec Hall at 2000 hrs.
18 Jan 45
Clear, bright day, temperature about freezing but sun shining. Boat arrived 1444 hrs bringing F/O McDonald and several men posted in. In unloading of the oil stove which was brought in from the Nimpkish on our scow, the back of the stove was pushed off the scow by the hoist, throwing it into the water. An effort will be made to recover it at low tide. During the evening F/O McDonald played for a sing-song in the canteen.
19 Jan 45
Dull, temperature about 35 degrees. Routine administration. Target practice for some personnel conducted by Sgt Valgardson in afternoon. Rehearsal for station show during evening.
20 Jan 45
Weather dull. Routine normal. Variety show held in Rec Hall at 2000 hrs, almost half of station personnel taking part. Enjoyed by all.

Weather dull with some rain. Show consisting of shorts from UBC held in Rec Hall at 2000 hrs.

Weather dull with steady rain. Heavy gales during late evening and night. No unusual happenings.
23 Jan 45
Weather dull, heavy winds, some rain. Target practice in afternoon conducted by Sgt Valgardson. F/O Murray and F/O McDonal taking part.
24 Jan 45
Weather dull with fairly calm sea. Nimpkish arrived at 1400 hrs bringing several 9 CMU men under F/S Tessier to repair damaged lines and modify pump line and Diesel Fuse Board. Nimpkish returned to Henslung for the night. Show in Canteen at 2000 hrs "Destination Tokyo". Projector broke down near end of showing, and last portion had to be postponed. Posting overseas for F/O JG McDonald came in today's mail. F/O Mcdonald will have to leave tomorrow in order to get embarkation leave.
25 Jan 45
Weather dull and cool with fairly good sea. Nimpkish brought a load of oil and picked up five operators posted south and F/O McDonald. No 9 CMU commenced work on the power lines. Movie "Woman of the Town" was shown afternoon and evening.

Weather cool with light rain. Routine administration carried on.
27 Jan 45
Weather clear and sea calm. Boat was expected but did not come as weather out at sea evidently unsuitable. F/O Murray and Cpl Brabant worked on Inventory as independent checkers are on route from Prince Rupert and No 3 RD to check for transfer of Inventory. Blankets and tools show certain shortages.
28 Jan 45
Nimpkish arrived at 1630 hrs with F/L Kelly of No 3 RD and Cpl Picard of Prince Rupert, inventory checkers; also three DOT personnel. As water was rough we were unable to unload all supplies, but mail and passengers came ashore. Boat returned to Henslung over night. It was discovered by Cpl Morrison, Diesel Fitter, that the pipe line between the filling ramp and the main storage tank had been broken by a falling tree which fell across it, presumably during the gale several days ago. Unfortunately it was not realized that a tree had fallen across the pipe line at the time of the storm, as attention was focused on the tree which had fallen across the power lines. Consequently all the oil, approximately 1500 gallons, which was poured into the line Jan 25 and Jan 26 ran into the brush and was wasted instead of reaching the storage tank. Although this unfortunate and expensive accident was not the result of negligence, instruction has been given to inspect this line in future before pouring oil into the tank.
29 Jan 45
Nimpkish returned from Henslung with balance of supplies and 27 drums of oil. F/L Kelly and F/O Murray commenced taking inventory. DOT operator, Mr Len Burns, left for Prince Rupert on posting. Nimpkish docked at Henslung overnight. Movie "Cabin in the Sky" shown in the Canteen.
30 Jan 45
Weather very clear and crisp with frost. Nimpkish returned to Massett without calling at this Unit, as overhaul party are awaiting there for transportation; also F/S Laing of WAC, who is to help with DOT Beacon Installation. Inventory check is proceeding rapidly although other things must necessarily be neglected with only one officer, particularly at the month end. However Orderly Room Clerk is carrying on very efficiently. Movie "Her Primitive Man" was shown in Canteen.
31 Jan 45
Weather clear, bright day with warm sun. Inventory check continued all day and into the evening until 2200 hrs. Secret Inventory is quite a problem with its hundreds of small items.

1 Feb 45
Early morning brought snow with a temperature just below freezing but before noon this changed to rain. Nimpkish has still not chanced leaving Massett although landing conditions here have been fair. Inventory check at Operations was completed at 1700 hrs, but final discrepancy schedules still have to be typed. Canteen was closed for stock taking. Quarterly overhaul will now be at least 3 days commencing work.
2 Feb 45
Weather cool and dull with stiff breeze, but water fairly calm at the dock. Nimpkish arrived 1500 hrs to unload overhaul party, F/S Laing and Hospital Assistant to relieve Cpl Cote. Inventory check was interrupted by the boat arrival but continued into the evening when lists of discrepancies were compiled. Work ceased at 0100 hrs. Nimpkish returned to Henslung Bay.
3 Feb 45
Weather dull with light rain and stiff breeze. As sea was rough Nimpkish could not leave Henslung Bay. Inventory was completed and signed and investigation evidence was compiled by F/L Kelly. Movie "Flight for Freedom" was shown afternoon and evening.
4 Feb 45
Weather dull with light rain. Routine normal. UBC films consisting of shorts was shown during the afternoon and evening.
5 Feb 45
Weather cloudy but warm. Nimpkish arrived at 1100 hrs and unloaded a number of barrels of oil and gas. F/L Kelly and Cpl Picard, inventory checkers, Cpl Porter, Cpl Cote, and Cpl Nickey departed on boat 1100 hrs. Remainder of day normal routine.
6 Feb 45
Weather fair in the morning and during afternoon grew steadily worse. Monthly Canteen Report was completed. No 9 CMU completed the primary line to the pumphouse. They are now awaiting equipment which is at Massett in order to complete the work on the Diesel switchboard. It is hoped this modification will largely eliminate our power trouble. which has been caused by overload on the fuses. F/S Laing and DOT Engineer are very busy installing a new high power beacon at the lighthouse. Cable required has not yet been located at Massett, but installation can be effected without it.7 Feb 45
Rain fell periodically during the day. The day was spent concentrating on administration work as boat is expected tomorrow. One beacon at the lighthouse has been installed and put into service. The installation of the stand-by has been started. Operations returned to the air at 1300 hrs after completion of the quarterly overhaul. Signal from WAC stated that mechanics for replacement are expected late in February.
7 Feb 45
Weather dull and cool. Boat arrived 1400 hrs. Sent word that this was to be its last trip to this unit, as posting action to Bella Bella had been received. M/V Stuart will replace the Nimpkish but date of arrival is unknown. Today's landing operation was a series of exciting incidents. The sea was choppy and at intervals fairly large waves crossed the gut, making unloading very difficult. As we were about to lift one boat full of supplies, the hoist hooks slipped off the one side and the boat was capsized throwing men and provision into the water. It is thought that most of the provisions were retrieved as the parcels fortunately floated long enough to allow the boat to be relaunched. The boat (M633) was badly scraped on the rocks. Two or more cartons of canned goods fell to pieces with the softening action of the water, but a large number of the cans were fished out individually by LACs Howard Miners and Phil Casavant, who stood in the cold water up to their waists. After the last trip had been made to the Nimpkish the boat was capsized by a wave on its return to the dock and hurled at lightning speed into a narrow rock gorge, where it jammed. Fortunately both men were able to leap to the rocks just as the boat came to a stop for in a matter of seconds she had turned on edge in the gorge in such a postion that both men would probably have been pinned. Although the boat was considered beyond repair, every effort was made to recover it. However it could not be moved while the water was rushing into the gorge in such fury, and it was left in the hope that it might float to the surface at high tide. A rope was attached securing the boat to the rocks in case this occurred.
9 Feb 45
Cool without rain. An attempt was made to salvage M418 but in spite of repeated efforts it was found impossible to dislodge the wreckage from the narrow gorge where it had become fastened. F/S Tessier and crew commenced work on Diesel Plant switch panels. During late evening water supply failed. After switching to emergency tank, F/S Tessier went to the pump where he found that the belt was slipping.
10 Feb 45
Weather became very rough during the night. A wind of gale proportions came up, accompanied by driving rain. Day's routine normal. During evening UBC shorts were shown in the Rec Hall. F/S Laing and Mr Restall, DOT Engineer, report that progress on beacon installation is very satisfactory.
11 Feb 45
Continued high wind. Routine normal. UBC shorts were shown in the afternoon and evening. Chicken dinner was served at 1700 hrs. The lighthouse keeper's wife and children were invited as guests of the Unit.
12 Feb 45
Wind continues very strong. In addition snow and hail fell several times during the day. F/O Murray and Cpl Brabant took stock in the Emergency Hut, as WAC has issued a new scale for each unit, a declaration of surplus stock is required. There are still a few rats getting into the hut, but the only remaining perishables are pilots biscuits. As these are not fit for consumption they will require replacement. Before this a suitable rat-proof compartment will be installed. Water pump house repairs were completed at 1900 hrs. A new and larger pumhouse should be constructed as servicing must now be done in very cramped quarters.
13 Feb 45
Storm continues with terrific wind and heavy sea. Falling tree at Raff Bay tore through the F/M transmitting antenna, rendering it unserviceable. The wireless mechanics constructed a temporary receiving antenna and used the receiver antenna for transmission. F/O Murray and all available personnel salvaged as much lumber as possible and all the drums, washed away from the dock during the height of the storm in the night. Drums and lumber were scattered along the shore for half mile. Dock and "A" frame were damaged as well as Utility Scow M553.
14 Feb 45
Storm abated for Valentine's Day, although sea still high. Light snow fell. Cpl Edwards, carpenter, and the fatigue crew repaired the dock as well as possible, and inspection was made prepartory to repairing the "A" frame. Morale of station surprisingly high. Bridge is becoming very popular in the evenings in the Rec Hall. Canteen stock is very low.
15 Feb 45
Weather is clear, bright, with touch of frost in the morning. Sgt Dodge, Cpl Brabant, & CO worked on the repair of the "A" frame, which was moved and lowered slightly. Main cable was also stretched. F/M continues to give reception trouble due to the use of the improper antenna. Boat M531 Stuart replacing Nimpkish, and left Bella Bella for Massett.
16 Feb 45
Weather cold with wind and rain. Cpl Edwards repaired the roof on the lavatory building. The roofing paper had been blown off in a recent storm. Other routine normal.
17 Feb 45
Weather mild and overcast,sea fairly calm. Cpl Edwards and LAC Harrison commenced repairing Scow 553 as replacement will not be here in time to unload oil on next boat trip. Oil supply is getting low. Completed hoist equipment repairs. Test runs show marked improvement now that cable is tightened. F/O Murray and Sr NCOs worked on Station Standing Orders.18 Feb 45
Dull and mild wiht a calm sea. M/V Stuart arrived at Massett. Sgt Valgardson and LAC Stacey went fishing for the unit and brought in two very creditable catches. An excellent steak dinner was served in the Mess Hall. Routine otherwise normal for Sunday.
19 Feb 45
Stormy weather, North west wind increased to gale force in the afternoon. M531 Stuart proceeded from Massett to Port Clements to pick up a row boat for this unit but Alliford Bay had not delivered the boat to Port Clements, through some failure to establish arrangements by wireless. F/O Murray worked on Station Orders most of the day.
20 Feb 45
Gale warning was announced for Northern coast, although there was only small evidence of it here. Weather was cloudy with light showers in the afternoon. F/O Murray and Sr NCOs worked on Station Standing Orders for this unit. These are now ready for typing and submission to WAC. Most of administration is cleared away, but the arrival of the boat will create more work.
21 Feb 45
Weather much milder with very little wind. Conditions at the dock are ideal. F/O Murray prepared a report on marine and landing equipment, this unit. F/M inventory was checked, and a call made to WAC regarding same. It is now ready or signature.
22 Feb 45
Gale commenced. Although wind here not of very great gale force high seas pounded the dock tearing away the "A" frame on the rock across from the dock. M/V Stuart reported wireless transmitter u/s, but left Massett for Henslung Bay, where she docked overnight. Work on Scow M553 completed in preparation for unloading oil. Mr N Kinnear is the only passenger on the Stuart as accommodation inadequate.
23 Feb 45
Storm abated somewhat. An attempt was made to unload Stuart. Very low tide made it difficult to operate. The mail was unloaded on the rocks at the old DOT landing. Stuart returned to Henslung Bay for anchorage over night. UBC shorts were shown in the evening, the only movie which arrived.
24 Feb 45
Weather improved. Stuart returned and unloading was completed. M659 Boat pulling, arrived from Alliford Bay, less oars. Unloading was hampered by low tide and cable trouble. No attempt was made to set up the "A" frame which had been washed away. F/O Murray and LAC Stacey proceeded to Henslung Bay with the Stuart as extremely calm. Trip was made there and back in about 4 hours, but upon return water was so rough and tide low that landing of oil was very treacherous. Only six drums were unloaded. Stuart returned to Henslung. Weather was clear. Bingo entertainment in Rec Hall in the evening.
25 Feb 45
Windy with cold rain but landing conditions good. Stuart returned at 1030 hrs. Because of misunderstanding no one was on guard at the dock, to warn camp of its arrival. As Stuart's radio still u/s no warning was received. Every one at camp was awaiting a phone call from the dock. When no word was received, F/O Murray called at 1100 hrs to find no answer. Proceeding immediately to the dock, no boat was to be seen. Stuart returned in the afternoon but by this time the weather too rough for easy landing. An attempt was made to use the scow. As the outboard motor refused to operate, it was necessary to tow the scow with a rowboat. As Stuart loaded the scow it assumed a decided list to starboard because water was getting in. This made towing very difficult. On return trip scow and boat were caught by big breakers just outside the gut, throwing the four men into the turbulent sea and washing craft and men on the rocks. the situation was a critical one for a few moments as the force of breakers is tremendous. It is nothing short of a miracle that all four men were rescued from the water without injury, aside from slight abrasions or bruises. LAC Dick Bond who was one of those standing guard on the rocks with tossing lines, made record time in getting to the rescue. Others came immediately. Men and rowboat were rescued but scow carrying about a ton and a half of fuel oil was thrown up on a jutting rock where it could not be dislodged. However later in the evening 6 of 8 oil drums were retrieved. The scow had to be left. At a muster parade held in the Rec Hall the CO read the compiled Station Standing Orders. All personnel who were to leave the unit on the boat were becoming impatient with continual delays.
26 Feb 45
Strong, gusty wind of gale force sprang up during the night made the sea very choppy and unloading impossible. Stuart proceeded to Massett to pick up more supplies and passengers. No mail has left the island since 8 Feb/45. Radar is tied down because of high wind. The diesel fitters worked on the outboard motor getting it into good shape to operate under rough sea conditions, it is hoped. Whether it will operate under load is now the sixty-four dollar question.
27 Feb 45
Landing conditions ideal. Numerous signals and telephone conversations sent in effort to get Stuart to leave Massett early. Finally got action at about 1200 hrs, noon. Stuart sailed for about one hours and then returned to Massett without apparent reason, arriving there 1415 hrs. F/O Murray spoke to the skipper who said sea was too rough and that he had not thought landing possible. Signal was then sent to Stuart instructing them to assume landing conditions as indicated by our Signal unless told the contrary. All personnel here are thoroughly brassed, browned-off and cheesed.
28 Feb 45
Heavy wind and extremely rough sea made sailing impossible. Cpls Brabant and Morrison worked on Station Inventory. Routine monotonously normal.

1 Mar 45
High wind continues with impossible landing conditions. No 9 CMU and Wireless Mechanics are making permanent repairs to the F/M aerial. Work on inventory continues. Individual Building Inventories are being drawn up for signature by NCOs.
2 Mar 45
Continued high wind and rough sea. Diesel fuel now down to about two days supply. We will resort to adding stove oil tomorrow. There are about 4 barrels available at the lighthouse. This is good woodcutting weather and everyone is digging in.
3 Mar 45
Improvement in weather. Wind reduced to a very stiff breeze, but sea still too rough for landing. M/V Stuart now has 17 to 18 passengers awaiting transportation to this unit. There are also about 16 personnel this unit on posting, leave and TD. Mrs Kinnear of lighthouse was taken ill during the night. Cpl Buick, hospital assistant was called. Advice was obtained by DOT telegrams from a doctor in Prince Rupert. Mess Hall provided ice for ice packs. Anticipate a period of at least a week in bed.
4 Mar 45
Boat arrived with 12 passengers. Landing was possible but not good. Among passengers were the Protestant Padre and the Educational Officer. The film "Syncopation" was shown. Spirits were high as a large amount of mail came. Padre decided to postpone the service until Monday evening.
5 Mar 45
Weather was windy with rain. Religious service was held at 1400 hrs in the Rec Hall, followed by communion at 1945 hrs. A movie "Ladies Courageous" was enjoyed at 2000 hrs. Painfully melodramatic in spots. Routine administration carried out during day.
6 Mar 45
Weather cool with breeze. Boat arrived. Landing was effected although conditions were not good. It was necessary to wait for good periods. Certain amount of risk has to be taken as the fuel supply is getting low. No 9 CMU work was not commenced today as the afternoon brought heavy rain. Movie "Wing and a Prayer" was shown in the canteen.
7 Mar 45
Day was mild without rain. All station personnel proceeded to the dock to retrieve lumber and oil drums from along the sea shore. The process was a slow one, involving the use of the Crawler Tractor. Boat remained at Henslung as landing was poor. Movie "Adventures of a Rookie" was shown in the Canteen.
8 Mar 45
Heavy wind with considerable rain. Cpl Brabant and assistants are concentrating upon drawing up sub-inventories for signature. This is an extensive job and requires much time and patience. Each inventory item is also being entered on a tally card, which shows quantity held and distribution. No 9 CMU are commencing to repair the road. Show "Good Morning Judge" was thoroughly enjoyed. Louise Albritton was very fine in the leading female role. Some time during the late evening the gale blew a small tree across the 2300 V line to the lighthouse. As line did not break the caterpillar was used to pull the tree off the line and fell it in the opposite direction.
9 Mar 45
Continued rough weather with snow and sleet. Fatigue crew commenced painting of the officer's quarters. Visiting officers decided to move to the hospital. Good progress was made the first day. Quarters certainly needed painting badly. Routine normal. Movie "The Imposter" was very fair.
10 Mar 45
Continued rough, blustery weather, with more snow. No unusual occurrences. Evening show was a group of WAC shorts. Tobacco is now all sold from the canteen, cigarettes, cigars, and pipe. We can only hope the boat can get in with oil tomorrow and return to Massett for our supplies.

Weather improved. Boat came in at 1000 hrs. Ten drums of oil were unloaded. The Padre, Educational Officer, WO2 Johnston and others left the unit on leave and posting. Day became mild and sunny in the afternoon. Work was discontinued as usual, except for shift personnel. Evening steak dinner was delicious. Show "Iron Major" was shown in the canteen.

Weather fair but wind so strong that it was decided not to have the boat come. Routine normal. No 9 CMU shimmed the road; another group worked on the inventory, and the fatigue crew worked in the officer's quarters. All eagerly anticipate next boat with mail and tobacco.

Water outside very rough but dock conditions very good. Boat arrived 1540 hrs with F/O Day, Lieut McDougall (dental officer) and other personnel. All freight and rations were unloaded except the oil. Boat returned to Henslung Bay for the night. Pay parade was held at 1900 hrs. Morale is very high today.

Weather very good with calm water and warm sunshine. Boat returned at 1130 hrs to unload oil. Boat left for Massett with outgoing passengers at 1500 hrs. F/O Day and F/O Murray went through the incoming mail. In the evening a movie "Two Girls and a Sailor" was shown in the canteen.

Weather continues to be unusually fine. Morning was spent balancing the NPF cash against the recent pay parade acquittance rolls and with other routine administration. Meeting was held at 1900 hrs to give out 138 pairs of wool socks received from the Salvation Army. Wool sweaters, gloves and scarves were also available. Show, "Star Spangled Rhythm" was presented in the canteen. F/O Murray and Cpl Cote made a camp inspection at 1430 hrs. F/O Murray posted overseas, reporting to Y Depot 6 April/45.

Quiet day, routine normal. F/O Murray went through outstanding matters with F/O Day. "Blues" dinner held at 1730 hrs in the evening, and picture, "Two Girls and a Sailor" shown. High wind and heavy rain in evening.

Routine still normal. No sign of turning gear motor as yet, so station still operational on fixed bearing. Secret inventory checked during afternoon and evening, only half a dozen items missing. Admin. Barrack inventory checked and taken over. Weather good.

Routine normal. Boat expected today, but weather too rough. Non-Secret Inventory distribution checked, S and C Publications checked, and Emergency Rations. Weather variable.

Routine normal. Stuart hoped for, but did not arrive. Sea good for unloading. Inventory check queries settled at cost of one conversion voucher and a couple of write-offs, not bad. Weather cold and spots of rain. F/O Murray handed over station to F/O Day preparatory to posting.

Boat expected today, landing conditions fair. Boat arrived 1300 PWT and during first trip of rowboat out, boat nearly swamped. During return trip rowboat swamped causing unfortunate loss of P/O Leece, Personnel Councellor, by drowning, body not recovered, and loss of F/L Newman, Personnel Councellor, possibly by exposure. Body recovered, but after 5 hours of artificial respiration by Cpl Cote and Lt McDougall, CDC, hope was abandoned. LAC Stacey, GD, Cpl Bird, and LAC Chapman, Seaman recovered due to efforts of station personnel. LAC Payntz injured slightly, and LAC Bonner washed off rocks but swam ashore successfully during rescue operations. LAC Chapman's bravery in swimming after F/L Newman outstanding. Newspaper clipping, Appendix "B" attached.

Advised that M/V Stuart woud be coming over in evening with F/L Solomon and F/O Anglin to conduct inquiry, but was weatherbound at Massett. Landing conditions too treacherous today due to heavy sea. Day spent in gathering evidence, checking personal belongings of F/L Newman, and other unpleasant tasks involved. Rowboat M659 surveyed, only slight damage, but assistance of another boat needed to move her off rocks. Search parties patrolled shore line for P/O Leece's body, but no sign.

Weather much calmer, and boat came over in afternoon, but did not attempt landing, laid over in Henslung Bay until tomorrow. Several articles of clothing from F/L Newman's suitcase found by search parties, but no sign of P/O Leece's body. Several possible improvements in landing facilities surveyed, by CO, Seaman, and No 9 CMU NCO including (1) Running a high wire right across bay to bluff on opposite point, and carry out loading and unloading directly from supply boat to shore. (2) Building a road to an unnamed well sheltered bay on west side of island involving building about 3 1/2 mile road. (3) Blocking off West entrance to "cut" by blasting adjacent rock, and extending island on north side of "cut" by breakwater, approximately 100 feet, and have supply boat tie up to it. Of these No. (1) considered to be cheapest and quickest if it is feasible to handle supply boat under the high wire.

Boat came in early, in midsummer landing conditions, and successfully unloaded a small consignment of stores and about 2000 bf of lumber for road repairs. F/O Soloman and F/O Anglin arrived for Court of Inquirty. Forty oil barrells loaded on during afternoon, and we were later advised by the Stuart that 3600 gals. delivered to Henslung Bay Tank. Requested that they bring as much as possible back. Court of Inquiry proceeding according to plan. No 9 CMU continuing work on road.

Court of Inquiry completed in afternoon. F/L Newman's body loaded on Stuart, which proceeded to Henslung for the night. No oil unloaded, down to 3 day's supply, and will be on stove oil if things don't pick up. Started showing movies again. "Once Upon a Honeymoon" tonight. Turning motor installed in station, and operational with same at 1200 hrs.

No attempt made at loading today, conditions not dangerous, but risky, and unless loading or unloading is really vital in future, it will not be carried out when any risk to personnel is involved. M/V Stuart proceeded to Massett with F/L Newman's body.

Stuart did not call today, apparently spent all morning loading at Massett, which will involve a lot of unloading at Langara. Heavy SW gale all evening, but landing conditions were very good at noon. Stove oil taken up to operations site and mixed in tank to keep things running.

Stuart came over today, but landing conditions bad, laid over at Henslung for the night. Routine normal. Movie "Coney Island" shown in the evening. Quarterly Overhaul on Beacon completed, party awaiting transport out.

Landing conditions still very bad in morning, so F/O Murray, Investigation party, and one man going on leave hiked out to Henslung Bay. Station busy on month end returns all day. Weather clear but windy, from NW making the bay very choppy. Half hour first aid lecture given by hospital assistant, followed by an hour's practise at Artificial Respiration, in canteen in the evening. Diesels started running on stove oil today, enough of it on hand to keep going for 4 - 5 days, unless landing conditions improve soon we will be out. No 9 CMU party awaiting return to Massett FAT. They have installed a lot of protection logs along the side of the road, and now need further supplies of planks to finish road repairs. In spite of intensive daily search of adjacent shoreline, no sign of the body of P/O Leece or any more mail bags or personal effects.

Quiet day, usual Sunday routine. Preparation of month-end returns continued. The 21st Anniversary of RCAF celebrated quietly. Blues dinner cancelled because of lack of rations from M/V Stuart.

Stuart called in early in the afternoon, and one unloading trip made carrying mail and meat. Sea reasonable close in to shore, but too rough out where the Stuart insists on staying to safely handle boat alongside, so project abandoned until tomorrow in the hope that it will be calmer. Two oars broken in the process. Linoleum floor laid in Rec Hall during the day, good job by Cpl Edwards. Supply of oil now stands at 3 days stove oil only. Hope we can unload more soon.

Really satisfactory day today, bay as calm as mid-summer, although it ws cold, wet and snowy. S/E wind blowing quite briskly, but no hinderance, as bay well sheltered. 52 barrels of oil unloaded, plus 69 dozen beer, 144 dozen coca cola, and about 100 various cartons of rations etc, plus a large official mail. M/V Stuart returned to Henslung again to fill remaining empty barrels, another 35. If this is unloaded successfully tomorrow we will have a 6 week supply on hand, and life will be a bit easier. First mail out since March 16 will go tomorrow, so there is a lot of it. The film, "The Sullivans", shown in the evening, an excellent picture. Landing conditions discussed with Org 3 at WAC today, and definite proposals for an installation similar to that described on 25 March are being submitted this mail.

Another good day for unloading, 31 barrels of oil brought ashore before lunch, and 10 passengers sent out, 7 on TD, 1 on leave, and LAC Stacey and Cpl Edwards on posting. Routine settled down to normal again in afternoon. The "Pearl of Death" shown in the evening. Wind SE with rain in morning, but cleared up in afternoon with wind from the SW.

Routine normal. Second AT 3 Transmitter fitted in W/T Section, tested and works satisfactorily. The film "A Guy Named Joe" shown in the evening much to the amusement of all concerned. Perfect weather, warm with sunshine, and good for unloading, if there was any to do.

Routine normal. Day spent in finishing up March reports to go out on boat expected tomorrow. Weekly inspection held in afternoon, buildings in excellent condition, but a lot of outside cleaning up is needed, it will take time but will eventually improve appearance of camp. Weather perfect, light west wind and sunshine all day.

Stuart arrived at 1400 PWT with 8 passengers, 5 postings, 2 returning from TD. Normal 10 day ration consignment on board, plus miles of wire to renew telephone lines. 30 pairs of boots also received. Exciting news, 22 SU Massett is closing down, and M/V Stuart is being relieved next trip by M/V Haida. Sorry to lose the Stuart as co-operation has been excellent and the skipper and crew have been very helpful. Large official mail dealt with in the evening. Weather perfect for unloading again, very smooth water and brilliant sunshine. Postings include F/S Radar Mechanic, Sgt Discip and PTI, Cpl Operator and 2 GDs. Sgt Fletcher, R Mech, posted out, on the way overseas, and Cpl Morrison and LAC Balaguy to Prince Rupert for Trade Test.

Easter celebrated today, as there was only bully beef off reserve rations last week. Celebrated properly too, with a "Blues Dinner", and all the trimmings down to a four - repeat FOUR - layer cake topped by an outstanding bit of outstanding sculpture which out-Venus'd Venus. Copy of the menu attached as appendix. The dinner was followed by a hectic game of Bingo in the canteen. Mr and Mrs Kinnear, and family of two invited from the lighthouse.

Indigestion general throughout camp today after last night's supper. Painting of Admin Block started, practically all of the ceilngs done. Camp general duties re-organized under Sgt Greaves and Sgt Hewitt to fully employ new GDs and station fatigue parties. Weather cold, wet, and windy all day. Station supply facilities discussed with S/L Arnold, CO Prince Rupert, in view of Massett closing down. Requested that supply boat work out of Port Clements, equipment and stores being taken there by road from Alliford Bay.

Utter chaos in Admin Section all day due to having four painters on ladders, chairs, boxes etc in orderly room and CO's office. Results by 5 pm justified the inconvenience. Arrangements made to convert Barrack Hut 4 from Carpenter shop to gymnasium, and WAC contacted re supply of equipment with encouraging results. Woodcutting in progress in the bush, to build up a good reserve above normal consumption. Outward mail for next boat in course of preparation. Weather variable from brilliant sunsine through heavy hailstorms. Power take-off attachment on tractor broke today, cast case cracked at a flaw. This will make hauling trees in the bush very difficult.

Orderly room painting finished, and most of Signal Section done during the day. New canteen floor scrubbed and polished, and furniture re-arranged to take better advantage of the facilities. Weather wet and cold in the morning, but cleared up to remain mild and sunny during the afternoon and evening.

Admin Block painting all completed. All Diesel Oil put in 5000 gallon tank, and empty drums taken back to dock to go out for refilling. Camp inspection and clothing parade held in afternoon, and demands made out for all clothing replacements required. Weather dull but mild.

Routine normal today, Stuart started over from Prince Rupert but had to turn back due to Gale Warning. Must have been in Hecate Strait as it was very calm here. Rained hard all day, and was raw and cold.

Routine normal, outgoing mail and stores made ready for despatch. Quiz contest held in the evening with about 25 participants, prizes for all, which raised a lot of laughs. Weather about the same as yesterday, except that there wasn't any rain.

Normal quiet Sunday, boat very much needed as there have been no films here since the last boat went out. Weather warm and sunny with a fairly strong breeze which dropped in the evening.

Stuart came over today on one extra trip as M/V Haida not yet on hand. Very little unloading, as the main reason for the trip was to take out Cpl Grams, on overseas posting. As his posting notice came in the day after the last boat his embarkation leave has been dwindling day by day ever since. Two rowboats M463 and M466 brought in, but are no use except in the calm water, as they are very small and planked thin. They can however be used for a bit of fishing later in the summer. Film "The Sky's the Limit", shown in evening, and a big mail came in, so all the camp is happy. Weather dull, but not a breath of wind, and unloading conditions couldn't have been better.

Weather good, light SE wind which gives excellent landing conditions.

Bernard Knipe, YMCA representative from Alliford Bay on the station for several days, brought in a very welcome set of snooker balls, also an excellent set of woodworking tools for recreational use.

The "Wireless Wildcats" beat the "Muskrats" in a warm up game of floor hockey prior to the commencement of the league on Monday. Weather mild but wet.

Total sales $591.00. Discussion Group on Co-operatives held in the evening under supervision of Mr Knipe, YMCA. Attendance small, about 20, but lively with 100% participation. The "findings" were that co-operatives were a good thing, but if they spread to the extent that all business is conducted in that manner and they continued to pay no Federal taxes, where will the government be? Weather wet all day.

M/V Haida arrived today, landing conditions were fair in the morning, but a fresh NW wind came up during the day, and it was too rough to work when the boat came in at 1700 PWT. One trip out was made in M659 with the outboard motor, but the sea was much rougher than it appeared from land, and it was not safe to attempt to unload anything. M659 returned to shore without mishap, but it was a tense moment. Sea very deceptive, as the waves were not breaking, but were much sloppier than expected. Great disappointment, as there has been no mail in for 10 days, also Cpl Henderson's embarkation leave is dwindling day by day. Wind dropped later in the evening but the sea was uncertain. Diesel Overhaul completed and party awaiting transportation out. Telephone line overhaul party held up for equipment which is on boat. Exciting news received in the evening, discharged RCAF personnel are no longer subject to military call-up. As there is a current WOG quota just issued, 4 discharge applications were submitted by signal immediately after WAC message received. Weather warm and sunny.

Landing conditions good, and a large consignment of rations was unloaded in the morning. Scow 392, 16' GP, received, and left at Henslung Bay for use by M/V Hesquiat next week when she brings in shipment of materials for accommodation hut there. 50 barrels taken to Henslung to be filled by "Dinawac" but caretaker would not allow them to be put on the dock. Taken to Rupert instead to be filled there. F/O Day went out on M/V Haida to collect April and May pay. Film "Old Acquaintance" shown in the evening. Weather clear and warm, with a light Northerly breeze.

Boat M661 received from Spider Island, boat not in very good shape, but is much safer than any of the others except M659. Haida returned to Rupert in evening to bring a scow back to Massett. Pay parade held in the canteen in the evening, morale well up.

Boat arrived at 1100 PWT after a long trip through fog. F/O Crysler and F/L Sutton, Padre, on board. Church service held during the evening. Reserve rations, Secret Inventory, Cash and NPF, Secret Documents and canteen stock handed over from F/O Day to F/O Crysler. Discharge authority for F/O Day received from AFHQ. Too rough to unload oil, so passengers and mail brought ashore, and boat returned to Egeria Bay until the fog lifted. Fog lifted in afternoon and sun came out bright.

M/V Haida arrived this morning. Unloaded supplies including 10 drums of stove fuel. Ideal weather for unloading.

Routine normal. Canteen and recreation hut thoroughly cleaned. The film "Meet the Boys" shown in PM.

Weather warm. Expecting arrival of Staff Officers from Command tomorrow but M/V Haida is u/s for the time being at Rupert. Due to pick up officers at Massett in the morning.

Command Staff Officers arrived in am aboard M/V Mesquiat. Landing conditions reasonable. Visiting officers were: Air Commodore DM Smith, Group Captain S Secord, Squadron Leader SCN Burridge, Squadron Leader CB Limbrick, Squadron Leader Nesbitt. An inspection of the camp and the technical site were carried out. A/C Smith, G/C Secord and S/L Nesbitt set off for Henslung Bay through the bush shortly after dinner. The other officers boarded the Hesquiat and proceeded to Henslung Bay where they picked up the officers who had hiked there. M/V Hesquiat departed Henslung Bay 6:15 PM.

Routine normal. Bingo played in the evening. $9 worth of prizes given away.

Rain all day but this did not deter several from sawing wood with the "tempermental" drag saw. News of M/V Haida's return to serviceability cheered drooping spirits.

Weather still decidely wet. M/V Haida had to lay over at Massett and then sought further protection at Port Clements. Fairly srong wind blowing all day.

M/V Haida arrived. F/O Horne, posted from WAC HQ, arrived. Supplies and oil unloaded.

A channel through the kelp was cut for the entrance to the gut is becoming difficult to row through.

F/O Horne and F/O Crysler went to Henslung Bay with rowboat and outboard to check on emergency shelter that has been erected there. Found it in A1 shape.

CO's inspection carried out. Canteen meeting held and hobby committee elected. Combination of good weather and good fishing. Winter supply of fish being stored in freezing room. Linoleum laid in mess kitchen.
