DAILY DIARY
27 RADIO DETACHMENT - MARBLE ISLAND, BC.
January 1, 1944 to December 31, 1944
1 Jan 44
At approximately 0100 hours the Fire Picquet, while making a round of duties discovered a fire in the rear wall of the Mess Hall, it was quickly extinguished and no damage was done with the exception of a small hole burned in the plywood wallboard. Origin has not been determined but it is thought that the fire may have been caused by a carelessly thrown cigarette.
At 0900 hours the MV Cape Canso called stating that it was on it's way, arriving at 1030 hours, two boats were launched to help unload the heavy cargo of supplies and personnel. The first boat made a trip without difficulty, but the second one rowed by Sgt. Heaven, carrying two passengers, LAC Jones and LAC Kelly met with an accident. A large swell caught the boat at the entrance to the South Cut, throwing it on partially submerged rocks. LAC Jones and LAC Kelly are missing and presumed to have drowned in spite of all attempts to rescue them. Further landing attempts were cancelled for the day.
Work continued in attempting to remove the large stump and other debris from the Inclined railway with the use of dynamite, but all efforts proved very unsuccessful.
2 Jan 44
No attempts were made to land the supplies from the Cape Canso as very poor conditions prevail. Routine and Operations normal.
3 Jan 44
A landing was attempted on the north side, but after one trip due to the falling tide further operations had to be cancelled. A Court of Inquiry was convened in the evening into the accident of January 1st.
4 Jan 44
The Supply Boat arrived first thing in the morning, but, when the boat from the Detachment had made it's way out a sudden strong gale arose with blinding snow, as a result of which it was considered wisest to abandon landing operations, and the the Station men remain on board rather than risk the return to shore. By 1230 hours the fury of the wind was such that the rotating antenna had to be locked. At 1312 hours all RDF operations, including the Beacon, ceased due to power lines being broken by falling trees. At 1450 hours lines were repaired and the Beacon placed in operation, but aerials remained locked.
5 Jan 44
Stormy seas made landing impossible. MV Cape Canso remained in the shelter of Canoe Pass throughout the day. Routine normal.
6 Jan 44
Landings were still impossible and the supply vessel was forced to return to Alliford Bay for supplies. It was decided that any immediate attempt to land the new pre-fabricated Recreation Hall best be postponed till better weather conditions.
7 Jan 44
Seas very rough. Wood cutting fatigues are very busy and the usual supply is unavailable due to the unserviceability of the Inclined Railway. Operations very quiet.
8 Jan 44
Routine normal. Oil was brought up from the reserve storage tanks to the Power House in the afternoon. Attempts to remove debris from the inclined railway still continuing.
9 Jan 44
The Donkey engine and a cable were rigged so as to help in the removal of slide debris, but the results were very poor as the cable being very light continued to break and the main stump remaind unmoved. Routine normal.
10 Jan 44
Routine normal. Strong south west wind and rough seas prevail. MV Cape Canso again returned to the shelter of Canoe Pass as conditions here did not warrant an attempt to land supplies. Gale increasing towards nightfall.
11 Jan 44
A gale estimated at 70 or 80 miles per hour blowing. Tremendous seas at high tide washed out the lower end of the inclined railway. Gale damaged antenna feeders of the F/M telling circuit, and the spacers have slid down out of place, the feeder lines on the receiving antenna are entangled and shorting. Circuit will have to remain unserviceable as neither equipment nor personnel are available at the Detachment to instigate repairs. Rotating CHL aerial had to be locked at noon, but the gale began to quiet down and shift towards the west at nightfall.
12 Jan 44
Damages of previous days storm are undergoing repair. A temporary receiving aerial was rigged for the F/M circuit but tests were not possible as the circuit has become unserviceable at Alliford Bay. A good track of over 143 miles length was received in Radar operations.
13 Jan 44
MV Cape Canso arrived in the early morning to investigate landing conditions but was forced to return to Canoe Pass. Two good tracks were received of over 120 miles length one of which was of over a hundred mile range.
14 Jan 44
Supply vessel was forced to return to Alliford Bay as landing conditions were still impossible, and meat supplies on board were in need of replacement. It was decided after many attempts to remove slide debris from the inclined railway, to circumvent it with a bend in the tracks.
15 Jan 44
Operations normal. Supply vessel came out from Alliford Bay but was advised to remain at Canoe Pass as landings were deemed impossible.
16 Jan 44
Storm damages are all completed, the only item remaining was the wash out at the lower end of the railway. MV Cape Canso arrived in the afternoon, three boats came shore, one of which was crashed on the rocks by a breaker smashing a side of the boat. Further landing attempts were discontinued. Mail, meat, canteen supplies and an electric motor for the refrigerator were the only articles brought ashore. The balance of the rations and all personnel with the exception of one Flight Sergeant were left onboard. F/S Saunder in charge of an RDF Overhaul party decided that with the aid of mechanics from the Det. decided to commence work on all RDF equipment. A signal was dispatched to No 4 Group requesting permission to cease operations for the period of the overhaul.
17 Jan 44
Electric motor was installed in the mess hall refrigerator and the machine again made serviceable. Permission was received to commence overhaul of RDF Equipment and the R/T Telling circuit.
18 Jan 44
Operations ceased for quarterly overhaul and repairs to power supply lines. Work commenced on all projects by all personnel that were available.
19 Jan 44
Overhaul work continuing. One mutilated body of an airman, beyond hope of recognition was washed ashore at the South Landing. Alliford Bay was immediately notified, and that it is believed that it was either LAC Kelly or LAC Jones lost on January first. Advice was received to hold a burial with a view of future exhuming.
20 Jan 44
Funeral service of a very simple nature was held at 1630 hrs. Overhaul still under way. MV Canso still sheltered in Canoe Pass awaiting landing conditions to improve.
21 Jan 44
Very strong south wind but moderate sea on North side made landing attempt feasible. Cape Canso arrived, but only one boat made a trip out, finding the return very hard and completely exhausting the rower. Further landings were impossible. The Cape Canso dinghy which had been left ashore on the last landing made an outward trip with passengers and the first mail to leave this Detachment since December 20th. R/T communications with the Filter Room at No 4 Group were resumed after overhaul of the AT3 transmitter.
22 Jan 44
RDF operations resumed at the end of the quarterly overhaul. Performance very satisfactory. Routine returned to normal.
23 Jan 44
A very strong west wind necessitated locking of aerials for the majority of the day. A considerable amount of the wood on the island is being used and the difficulty of obtaining it is increasing day by day.
24 Jan 44
Operations normal, wind still fairly strong. An aircraft from Alliford Bay created some excitement as it flew over the Detachment to drop some necessities, a quarter of beef, some cigarettes, yeast and mail. The Detachment has not been supplied with proper rations since January first and a considerable amount of emergency rations have been consumed.
25 Jan 44
At approximately 1000 hrs RDF ground equipment was rendered unserviceable due to a burnt field in the 3 HP antenna turning electric motor. Landing conditions were very favourable but no boat was available as it had gone to Cape St James.
26 Jan 44
At approximately 0100 hrs the Beacon became unserviceable, no replacement of essential parts are available. Motor field coils on gantry turning motor are repaired and attempts to render the ground equipment serviceable are continuing. At 1400 hours the FM circuit was made serviceable by straightening of tangled aerial feeders. It will likely be necessary to repeat these repairs after all strong gales as it is impossible to replace fallen spacers. Power and telephone lines to operations were down for a period of 3 hours caused by fallen trees.
27 Jan 44
Radar operations still unserviceable, although motor was made to run, insufficient power could be obtained from it to turn the aerials at a desired speed. F/M circuit was used to a great extent after the long period of unserviceability.
28 Jan 44
Radar operations commenced at 1520 hrs, electric motor is operating but the speed cannot be raised above one turn per minute instead of the required four turns. Considerable difficulty was experienced during the night with the motor blowing fuses, a request had to be sent to No 4 Group for additional fuse links as the supply here is nearly exhausted. Group was also signalled that it would be adviseable if No 28 Detachment would not start their overhaul until replacements were received here.
29 Jan 44
Operations continued at a slow speed without further trouble. Routine normal.
30 Jan 44
Routine normal. Calm weather prevailing and it is regretted that no supply boat could be had as landing conditions have not been so good for the past couple of months.
31 Jan 44
Operations were very busy, a good track of over 186 miles length was plotted and a range of 130 miles was received. Tracks of three separate aircraft plotted at one time showing a considerable increase in activity for the district in comparison to the past.
