Lovely bright day. Volleyball series finished with the "Shaky Shamrocks" copping the $7.00 merchandise first prize. Notification received that boat will probably start this evening. One man LAC Durnford twisted an ankle. The outboard motor was broken off and sunk. Dredging will commence as soon as sea calms. Aircraft showing Mark II IFF distress picked up about 2300 hrs. Considerable trouble experienced in contacting #10 RU but contact finally made and information passed. 27 Apr 45

Warm calm day. Administration work heavy due to mail yesterday. In the early evening a most unfortunate occurrance took place. F/S Geddes, 7508, who had been out in the DOT row-boat fishing just off the island, was found not to have reported back to the Unit, by 1800. Search was commenced immediately in Unit's outboard and continued until 2200 when visibility was too poor. Alliford Bay was informed, also WAC. The only theory which could be reasonably accepted was that the airman got so engrossd in fishing he may have lost the oars, and run into a rip tide. He was last seen about 1700 by two or three personnel and he was then alright. Alliford Bay informed the Unit that a/c would be sent out in search at first light in the morning.

28 Apr 45

Calm, warm. Search started at day break by Unit's outobard for F/S Geddes who is still missing in rowboat since 1700 yesterday. Also several parties sent out in search around the island and on the west coast of Kunghit Island, the main island to the north. Naval and DOT boats also taking part in search. Three Canso's from Alliford Bay taking part. At approximately 1700 Mine Sweeper who had been taking part visited and stood off from Unit. Unit CO went out to see skipper of the boat. The OC Unit who had been with two airmen over to Kunghit Island had seen a small boat off the west coast of the Island. Skipper of Mine Sweeper, however, had been in that vicinity about that time and had confirmed that the vessel we saw must have been DOT Fisheries boat. Conversation with skipper of Mine Sweeper revealed that the most likely place for the airman to have drifted would be up the east coast of Kunghit Island. At shortly after 1700 minesweeper departed and made search up the east coast of the Island. Fortunately the weather is in our favour, making conditions almost ideal for our search. Hope that F/S Geddes would be found was high until late in the day. In conformity with AFAO. 8/1 Para 3. AFHQ and WAC were advised by signal at 290610 Z. that airman was missing, name and address of heir being given. Report from DOT at light-house that Bar. was falling, wind also rising south-easterly. Alliford Bay promised that a/c would be searching tomorrow if wx at all favourable. M/V Huron standing by, expect her to visit unit tomorrow.

29 Apr 45

Wind 30 MPH SSW, Bar. rising, visibility half mile. M/V Huron reported that due to wx condition she was unable to search south, would do so northward. At 1800Z M/V Huron reported she was moored at Skaat Bay awaiting better sea conditions. It is not known if any other vessels are taking part in search or not.

30 Apr 45

Fine, calm. Search for F/S Geddes commenced again by Unit's outboard, aircraft 11070, Canso from AY, M/V Huron and Naval Mine-Sweeper. Results, unfortunately, still negative. Further telegram sent the missing airman's wife via DOT, also AFHQ Documents of F/S Geddes forwarded to Alliford Bay via M/V Huron at request of skipper of Huron. Letter of sympathy written to Mrs Geddes at 47 Roslyn Ave, Ottawa, Ont. Seems rather strange that the Unit has had no reply to the two telegrams which have been sent to Mrs Geddes.

1 May 45

Wind south, 30 mph, barometer slowly rising. Weather unsuitable for Unit outboard to go out in search of F/S Geddes. Had it gone out it would have been equipped with small transmitter and receiver so that Unit could have kept in touch. Unit visited by Naval Vessel Kalamalka at 1300. Informed us that her transmitter was out of order and would be returning to base unless otherwise informed. We passed message to CPC Esquimalt and to WAC. Further message sent via AFHQ to wife of F/S Geddes, re development of search. Signal received from WAC informing that search is now cancelled. Visual watch still being kept by Unit personnel. 3 May 45

Slight wind, visibility poor. Indian fishing boats in vicinity, will be informed of missing airman so they they may assist while trolling. M/V Huron ETA Unit 1245. M/V Huron arrived with F/L Burchill, Padre from Alliford Bay and also F/O Gain as investigating officers in the case of the missing airman. M/V Huron replaced normal run of supply boat for this trip, bringing mail, rations.

Calm, cool. F/O Gain, investigating officer re disappearance of F/S Geddes, commenced proceedings. F/L Burchill and F/O Stott took inventory of airman's service and personal equipment. These effects will be forwarded to Alliford Bay for retention until authority for disposal is received.

5 May 45

Warm, calm, slight wind. F/O Gain from Alliford Bay proceeding with investigation. Commanding Officer conducted inspection of camp, Sgt L Giles, Orderly Sergeant. 8 May 45

Warm, sunshine. All personnel that can be excused are off duty today. Service conducted by F/L Burchill, Padre from Alliford Bay, on TD at the Unit. Smoker held in Rec Hall in the evening after the service. Personnel are to be commended in their behaviour, they conducted themselves very well.

9 May 45

South-east wind, rain. It is to be hoped that the weather abates as our fuel oil is running quite low. It is going to be the practise in the future to have a reserve of 50 drums or so on hand at all times. Activity at Operations for the week as follows: 115 a/c tracks, max range 165 miles, with longest track of 255 miles. Show in Rec Hall in the evening.

10 May 45

South-east wind, visibility 1/2 mile. Supply of oil running very low. Hope it is possible for supply boat to visit Unit soon. No oil has been received although demanded more than two weeks ago. At 1500 hrs evaporators closed down in order to conserve fuel oil. In future it will be the practice to have a reserve of 100 drums (4500) gallons) on hand at all times. Heavy official mail.

18 May 45

22 May 45

Sunshine, westerly wind. All service police posted from Unit with the exception of the NCO i/c who is being held at Alliford Bay for medical check-up. Word received from Alliford Bay that supply boat will be arriving Wednesday. For the past few days Mr B Knipe, YMCA representative has been with the Unit, several of the personnel have assisted in the construction of an archery range. This should prove quite popular with the older members of the Unit. Volleyball is played extensively on the Unit, that being the only outdoor game that can be played, due to the unavailability of space. Signal received from AFHQ requesting communications which took place between this Unit and the Next-of-kin of F/S Geddes, airman who was lost from the Unit on the 27th April.

23 May 45

Bright, cool, light south east wind. Message received stating that boat with barge had left Vancouver, will be supplying annual shipment of coal and oil. No word received of supply boat from Alliford Bay. If fuel oil is not provided today it will be necessary to cease operations. Service in this respect has been very poor.

24 May 45

Warm, calm. Service supply boat arrived at the Unit at 0730, delivering 25 drums of fuel oil, 5 drums of gas and mail. As the service boat was the small boat, M/V Babine, no passengers departed from the Unit. Ony passenger to arrive was replacement DOT employee. Message received from M/V Hesquiat which was on the way to the Unit with large shipment of coal and oil. Should arrive sometime Friday. Understand M/V Squamish will be standing by while scow unloaded.

25 May 45

Warm, slight wind. Information relative to Ontario and Federal Elections promulgated in DRO which are issued each Friday at this Unit. Supply boats expected at Unit today did not arrive. They are probably meeting at Rose Harbour. Normal supply boat will then bring large scow and stand by until unloaded.

26 May 45

Very warm, easterly wind. No word received at 0900 from Supply boat. F/L Moor (Radar) posted in to the Unit effectively 26th May, date of arrival to be advised. Probably will be CO replacing F/O Stott, W. M/V Hesquiat arrived 1130 with passengers. Party of 6 airmen (9 CMU) arrived to erect new derrick on dock. Quarterly overhaul party (No 2 TSU) also arrived, party of three. Also two telephone linesmen reported from Alliford Bay. Departed were service police who have been posted from this Unit to WAC. Also departed were Sgt Coates and LAC Cote on TD to hospital, Alliford Bay.

27 May 45

Very warm day, slight wind. M/V Squamish arrived with scow at 0500 hrs. Was not possible to commence unloading until after lunch as tide was too low and we had instructions that scow was not to be grounded. Will probably take about three days to unload. Fortunately the Unit will not be operating, due to overhaul for a few days so all radar personnel will be available for unloading scow. Work slow due to having to work with tide. Work ceased at 2000 hrs due to low tide.

28 May 45

Westerly wind. Work continued on unloading of scow at 0600 hrs. Quarterly overhaul continuing with assistance of Unit mechanics. After unloading of scow at high tides, it is realized that it will take far too long to get the scow unloaded if it is only going to be done at high tide. At 1600 hrs (high tide) scow tied up and allowed rest on rocks at low tide. Unloading continuing until 2200 hrs.

29 May 45

Warm, calm. Very fortunate in having such good weather during unloading of scow. At 1300 hrs scow was observed to be leaking, by 1400 hrs, one third of the scow was under water. About 100 drums of oil were washed off the scow but those were pulled in by our outboard boat. Conditions for unloading a scow as this at this Unit are very poor. Should it be the intention to operate this Unit over a long period of time, the construction of proper facilities would offset the cost in loss of equipment. If the weather turns rough it will be impossible to unload the scow.

30 May 45

Warm, calm. Scow unloading continuing as well as possible. Should be finished by tonight. Scow although damaged will be in condition to be repaired. Sgt Cooper and LAC McLean completed check of telephones on the Unit. No 9 CMU will be able to erect new derrick when unloading of scow is completed. Unloading completed at 1930 hrs.

31 May 45

Warm, calm. M/V Squamish returned for scow and also M/V Hesquiat arrived with passengers at 0515 hrs. Both left Unit at approx 0630hrs. Quarterly Overhaul party for beacons arrived on Service Boat as also did Mr & Mrs Smith (DOT) of the lighthouse. New chef arrived to replace LAC Coultan posted to Sea Island. Oil drums still being retrieved from the water. If supply of coal should be deemed necessary next year some other arrangement should be made as the facilities and manpower at this Unit are inadequate if marine equipment is to be preserved. Smaller quantities in a smaller scow would have saved both time and equipment.
