CGS
Security Measures for Defence of RDF Stations
Protection of RDF Station, Cape Bauld.
1. A signal has been received this date from the Air Officer Commanding, Eastern Air Command, the text of which is quoted hereunder:-
"Owing to exposed position, RDF Station Cape Bauld is extremely vulnerable to shelling attack by U-boats. At present machine gun defences only are available. GOC in C Atlantic Command was requested to provide more adequate gun defences. He advises that one eighteen pounder field gun Mark II at present in Ordnance Depot, Halifax, also suitable ammunition might be spared for this purpose but required authority from NDHQ to release this equpment. If released gun can be shipped on Lawrence K Sweeney now loading for final trip to Bauld. Gun will be set up on suitable mounting vicinity Cape Bauld Station and manned by RCAF personnel who will be trained at Halifax prior to departure. Request you arrange with NDHQ for release of this equipment. As Lawrence K Sweeney sailing approximately November 2, immediate action would be appreciated."
2. The RDF Station mentioned is located at position 51º40'N, 55º20'W. It is expected that the Station will be in operation by December 1st. It will be manned continuously by a detachment of RCAF personnel to a total strength of forty-five throughout the winter and seventy-five all ranks eventually.
3. As some means of gun defence capable of combating an enemy U-boat is essential, and the one eighteen pounder field gun at present at Halifax seems adequate, it would be appreciated if you would authorize the release of the gun for the purpose requested and advise the General Officer Commanding in Chief, Atlantic Command and this Headquarters of your decision.
