Shipment & Disposal of RCAF
Operated AW Station at Cape Spear

A conference was held on the morning of 19 June 1945 relative to the disposition of the RCAF operated US Army AW Station at Cape Spear.
Persons at the conference were as follows:
a. Capt Richard A Hopkins and Capt Robert Gundlach for the US Army.
b. Mr Leach, Mr Kilgere and Mr Dubreuil for the RCAF.
The situation at Cape Spear is as follows:
a. The station will cease operation on or about 2230 NT 20 June 1945.
b. There are buildings as follows:
One (1) large garage (temporary building)
One (1) barracks (temporary building)
One (1) administration building (temporary building)
One wood maintenance shack (prefabricated part of SCR 271)
One (1) technical building containing radar transmitters, receivers, antenna drive, mounting, pedestal and on top of which is antenna (prefabricated metal construction, part of SCR 271)
One (1) wood power building containing 2 ea Power Units PE-85-D and attendent 5 panel switchboards (prefabricated, part of SCR 271)
c. Members of the RCAF estimated that it might take two (2) weeks or more to dismantle the above mentioned prefabricated buildings.
It was decided by mutual agreement that the following procedure would be generally effective in the US Army re-acceptance of responsibility.
a. That the RCAF with its regular locally assigned technical personnel dismantle the radio set SCR 271 and the radio set SCR 188-A as follows:
The SCR 271 transmitters, receivers, oscilloscopes and other equipment as listed on the joint inventory at the third platoon site, plus the Modification Kit, CESL #D71-C1, be disconnected and so placed in their respective shelters for packing and crating by the US Army. The antenna AN-118 is to be removed to the ground and dismembered into its separate shipping segments.
The SCR 188-A with all components is to be silenced and consolidated for crating and shipment by the US Army as listed in the joint inventory down to and including Power Unit PE-75-A Serial #67483.
Any equipment or parts removed from the equipment above listed as inventoried will be listed by the RCAF as missing ie under the inventory of the SCR 271 "1 Rectifier RA-39, Serial #82 less one (1) fan."
b. Authorized representatives of the United States Army and RCAF will jointly inventory all equipment, with a view to matching up to the original joint inventory taken in October 1944. All items missing from the original inventory will by joint agreement be so noted.
c. The RCAF agrees to leave (10) or twelve (12) of its personnel at the station for purposes of aiding the joint inventory with personnel of the US Army until such time as by mutual agreement the US Army can take over complete responsibility.
Problems to be solved at a future date.
a. Method of disconnecting the Newfoundland commercial power source from the US Army transformers.
b. The number of copies of the joint inventory to be made is as yet undecided. It is suggested, however, that they be in the following number:
Three (3) copies to the RCAF.
Four (4) copies to the US Army
a. One (1) copy for the Technical Service concerned.
b. One (1) copy for the US Army representative at the AW site
c. Two (2) copies for the G-4 Office, Newfoundland Base Command
