The only reason this particular group is on the seashore dressed as they are is because they were "recruited" to load gravel onto our 50 cwt truck, and to shovel it back off somewhere on or near the station. We used the gravel to build roads and to fill the large pot-hole where we wanted to put in a Volleyball court.
These volunteers look happy because most off duty men volunteered regularly for such jobs as it got them off the station, gave them some exercice and fresh air, and an appetite for supper.
