Cloudy - ceiling 2000-3000. Light snow in the morning, light rain during the afternoon. Visibility generally over 10, reducing to 3 to 5 in precipitation.
The first day in the life of No. 4 Detachment was generally one of bustle and some confusion, due to the overnight conversion from No. 4 Group Headquarters with the inevitable scramble for clearances both here and at the relevant Sections in Prince Rupert Station. During the course of the day the following postings were effected: V30042 Fl/O Graham, MM to Air Force Headquarters; C6127 F/l Stewart, HA to No 2 ED; A/S/O Riexinger, EA to No 2 ED; A/S/O Gordon, T to No 2 ED; C1765 F/l McCardle, WH to WAC, HQ; also one Hairdresser to RCAF Station, Prince Rupert and one Clerk Admin to WAC Headquarters.

Cloudy - ceiling 4000-5000. Rain and drizzle all day. Visibility over 15 in the morning, down to 3-5 in the afternoon.
Following a strenuous day, this turned out to be comparatively quiet, although the excitement of anticipated moves to new fields was again evident, mingled with apparent sorrow at the breaking up of a happy station. No incident otherwise to report.

P/O WS Dee (ADCO) addressed a meeting of Army Area Officers at "B" Mess at 1915 hours, on the purpose and functions of the Aircraft Detection Corps. Posting of attached personnel continued, with 6 Clerks Operations Fighter departing for Patricia Bay, 2 Standard General Duties to No 5 OTU, Boundary Bay, and one Clerk General to No. 11 Staging Unit, Dog Creek.

Ceiling over 5000 till noon with drizzle in morning and rain in afternoon after 1400 hours. Visibility over 10, down to 5 in rain.
Two Standard General Duties and one Canteen Steward departed for No. 5 OTU, Boundary Bay. Three Clerk Operations Fighter proceeded to Patricia Bay. On the boat sailing at 1330 hours were - G/C RH Foss (C373), W/C Evans (C153), S/L HE Jones (C1704), S/L OW Froom (C2094) for WACHQ, and S/L JN Ballinger (C1188) for No 5 OTU; F/L WR Breatch (C9111) left by train at 2000 hours for Comox, BC. A party of eight airwomen accompanied by S/O Lyon, S/O McLaren and Lieut Cowan (CWAC) went bowling at the USO alleys. S/O KM Todd arrived by train at noon, from Tofino via Terrace. P/O CA Finley arrived on posting from Terrace, BC.

Administration Staff held an informal farewell dinner for S/O McLaren, she was about to proceed to Tofino.

Overcast. Ceiling generally 6000, visibility over 10.
Postings of attached personnel, which have been hampered by shortage of rail and boat transportation, was pushed farther forward with the departure of one Clerk Admin to No 2 Wing HQ, 9 Clerk Operations Fighter to Patricia Bay, one Canteen Steward and two Drivers Transport to No 5 OTU and one Clerk General to No. 165 Squadron at Sea Island. S/O McLaren also departed by CNR boat for Tofino via Vancouver, F/L LEP Williams arrived on posting from Smithers BC. Barrack Block No. 6 completely vacated, mattresses removed, and floors and windows also ablution rooms cleaned.

At an impromptu gathering of airwomen and airmen, plans were laid for an open "Sports Nite" every Tuesday in the Rec. Hall. Heat and Water were shut off in Barrack Block No 6 (Officer's Quarters). One Clerk Steno and one Standard General Duties proceeded to No 2 Wing HQ, Edmonton. East half of Barrack Block No 7 (Sergeant's Quarters) altered to house Airmen's Wet Canteen.

Works and Buildings Section, under the energetic direction of F/S JE Allan, pushed forward the work involved in closing down buildings. Recreation Hall windows and floors cleaned and heat turned off. Administration Building windows and floors of upper floor rooms were thoroughly cleaned. Heat turned off in Flying Control Room. Mattresses from vacated Barrack Blocks stored in former Air Staff Orderly Room. The tie-up of postings due to shortage of transportation space was somewhat relieved by the first sailing in a long time of a CPR boat. The following postings were effected: One clerk Steno to No.3 RD. Two RTOs to Tofino. One Canteen Steward , two Equipment Assistants and two Drivers Transport to No. 5 OTU, Boundary Bay. Thirteen Standard General Duties, two Clerk Operations Fighter, two RTOs, to Patricia Bay. Two Clerks (C&C), one Equipment Assistant and five Clerks Steno to Patricia Bay.

Ceiling over 9000 in the morning, reducing to 3000 after noon with light rain commencing at 0900 hours. Visibility 10.
Eleven Wireless Mechanics departed for RCAF Station, Prince Rupert and one Wireless Mechanic reported to No. 7 Squadron, Prince Rupert. P/O BR Patience arrived on posting from Terrace BC.

S/O KM Todd addressed WDs in WD Recreation Centre on policy and plans for future "Nite-In" regular WD "Monday" feature, lifted to enable girls to see friends off on postings. Two Clerks General, six Wireless Operators Ground departed for No 2 Wing HQ, Edmonton; and two Clerks Steno for No 3 RD Vancouver. Barrack Block No 6 completely closed down and locked. East half of Barrack Block No 17 cleaned, and mattresses removed.

Broken and scattered throughout the day, based at from 2/3000. Visibility unlimited.
S/O FE Herbin took over "handicraft" classes, starting with "puppets" and marionettes. New "Sports Night" in Rec Hall inaugurated. A good turn-out. One Driver Transport and four Standard General Duties proceeded to No 5 OTU, Boundary Bay. One WOG to Alliford Bay. North side of Barrack Block No 4 (Officers' Quarters) completely cleaned, mattresses removed and heat shut off.

S/O FE Herbin conducted handicraft classes in the WD Recreation Centre. One Clerk Operations Fighter departed for Patricia Bay. One Standard General Duties to No 5 OTU, Boundary Bay. Building No 16 (Original Airmen's Canteen) completely scoured, electric refrigerator disconnected and heat shut off. West half of Barrack Block No 17 completely cleaned, mattresses stored, heat shut off and doors locked. S/L AL Mills (C3229) the new Officer Commanding, arrived on posting from No 2 Detachment, Victoria.

Ceiling unlimited; high scattered to broken with lower scattered to broken at about 7000 driving most of the day. Visibility unlimited. Wind NW, backing to SW at 10/15 mph.
S/O Blenkinsop (Command Auxiliary Services) arrived by air, and addressed airwomen in WD Recreation Centre at 1900 hours, regarding educational courses and rehabilitation generally. S/L AL Mills, F/L RR MacDonald, F/O RB Yule, S/O KM Todd and S/O Blenkinsop were present at the wedding of F/S Adrian in the Sergeants' Mess. Airmen's Wet Canteen moved to East Half of Sergeants' Mess. Postings: One Clerk Operational (BR) to 2 Wing HQ. Four WOGs and two WMs to 32 OTU, one Standard General Duty and one chef to No 5 OTU. Two chefs and one WM to No 3 RD Vancouver. One WM to 135 Squadron, Patricia Bay.

Ceiling 3000, overcast to broken with occasional higher overcast. Visibility generally 15, lowering during the afternoon for a short time in light precipitation. Wind mainly SE at 10/15 mph.
Many WDs attend a Clothing Parade for a check on summer uniforms, and for withdrawal of old-style greatcoats. One Wireless Operator Ground departed for Ucluelet. Barrack Blocks 28 and 23 completely cleaned, water and heat turned off, and doors locked. No 9 CMU installed gate valves on an air line controlling steam to Barrack Blocks Nos 4, 6, 28, 26, and 15.

F/L Koffend, the new Protestant padre at Prince Rupert Station, conducted his first Church Service at 1315 hours, the first Service on this Station in two months. Attendance was unsatisfactory and it has been decided to hold future services at 1000 hours. Nine CWACs arrived this evening from Kitchener, Ontario, to be attached to No 9 AAOR, bringing present strength of CWAC to one officer and 12 other ranks.

Overcast to broken at 5/7000 at first, and occasionally unlimited ceilings, lowering briefly in the afternoon to broken at 4000. Visibility unlimited during the day. Surface winds light to calm and variable.

A number of Airwomen of Clerk Operations and RTO trades, presently unemployed in these trades, assisted the City Victory Loan Committee with window displays. This Detachment supplied plane silhouettes, photos, ensigns, etc for display in CN Telegraph window. A strong representation of No 4 Detachment Personnel attended the "Y" Stage Show at Prince Rupert Station. W/C FTS Sehl departed by MT Vehicle on posting to Prince Rupert Station. One Wireless Operator Ground proceeded to No 17 Staging Unit, Smithers.

Mainly broken clouds at 6/8000 with scattered and occasionally broken at 3/4000, becoming overcast to broken at 3500 to 4000. Occasional rain showers in the afternoon. Visibility 10 or better. Surface winds calm to light and variable.
A party of airmen and airwomen enjoyed an evening of bowling at the USO Alleys, the first in a series of regular Wednesday bowling parties. S/O D Robinson (Filter) arrived on posting from No 2 Detachment.

Ceiling unlimited. Scattered to clear at first, becoming scattered at 4/5000 but remaining unlimited throughout the period. Visibility unlimited, except before 0900 hours when down to 1/8th mile in dense ground fog. Surface winds calm to light and variable.
One Wireless Operator Ground posted to WACHQ. Airmen and Airwomen enjoyed an evening of Bingo and informal dancing in the WD Rec Centre.
21 April 44
Ceiling unlimited, becoming overcast and lowering to 3/4000 near end of period. Visibility over 10 miles. Intermittent light rain beginning 2100 hours.
Remaining half of Barrack Block No 4 vacated, thoroughly cleaned, mattresses removed and heat shut off. All RCAF and AAOR Officers, also two civilians, now housed in Building No 3, formerly Senior Officers Quarters. S/L Coleberry, HM (Equip) departed on posting to WACHQ.

Overcast. Intermittent rain throughout the day, becoming continuous near end of period. Visibility generally over 8.
Due to movements of former No 4 Group HQ Signals Section to Prince Rupert Station, the number of Airwomen attached to Seal Cove for duty has increased, to twenty-nine, comprised of WOGs, Clerk (C&C), Clerks General and Clerks Stenographer. Four WOGs departed fro WACHQ. 4 Standard General Duties to No 5 OTU and one RTO to Patricia Bay, and one Clerk (C&C) to Sea Island. The last of the Flying Control Officers attached here also departed on the following postings: F/L LEP Williams to Sea Island; P/O LE Pooke to WACHQ; P/O BR Patience to No 15 OTU; P/O CA Finley to Patricia Bay.

A combined Protestant Church Service was held at Seal Cove at 1100 hours. RC Service held in lounge of Rec Hall at 0930 hours. A party of fifteen spent part of the day climbing the mountain.

Two firemen and one Security Guard proceeded on posting to Sea Island, also one Standard General Duties to Prince George, one Electrician to Prince Rupert Station, one Carpenter to Tofino, one Stationary Engineer to Coal Harbour, and one Fitter General to Ucluelet. F/L Hinton (Personnel Officer from WAC) addressed airwomen in WD Rec Centre. Wiener roast and sing-song in WD Rec Centre was enjoyed by a large gathering of Airmen and Airwomen. S/O Greg, Messing Officer from WAC, arrived on TD.

The weekly bingo and informal dance attracted the usual representation of airmen and airwomen.

A party of fifty airwomen, four WD Officers and a CWAC Officer attended a dance at the US Army Port Edward Camp. Sixth Victory Loan - 96 subscriptions totalling $7850.

Music Appreciation hour in the WD Rec Centre was enjoyed by a number of airwomen. F/L Koffend officiated at a Protestant Church Service in the Rec Hall, at 1330 hours.
Sixth Victory Loan - 96 subscriptions, totalling $7850, averaging $82 per subscription and $40 per capita.

A fllight of airwomen and a flight of airmen formed part of RCAF squadron in tonight's Victory Loan Parade. Following the parade, a party of airmen and airwomen engaged in a friendly bowling tournament. One Painter "B" posted to Prince George.

Bingo tonight in WD Rec Centre followed by "record" dancing. A number of airwomen attended the farewell dance sponsored by the outgoing Midland Regiment and held in the Navy Drill Hall.

Air Commodore Smith and G/C Luke arrived from Prince Rupert Station at 1645 hours and returned to Seal Cover after a brief inspection. Twenty WDs accompanied by S/O Todd, aS/O Lyon and Lt Cowan, attended a dance held by 44th Bty. One Clerk (General) "B" and one Clerk (Stenographer) "B" arrived on posting from Sea Island, for duty at Prince Rupert Station. YMCA Movie in Rec Hall - "Hat Check Honey" was attended by 60 personnel. Victory Loan Totals: 97 subscriptions totalling $7650.

Twenty WDs attended softball practice at Seal Cove. Floor Hockey in the Rec Hall. Typing classes under the direction of S/O Todd commenced. Hairdressing and Handicraft classes also organized under the direction of LAC Dubois and S/O Herbin respectively. One Standard GD (WD) posted to Sea Island.

Miss Cryderman of Canadian Legion Educational Services spent afternoon and evening interviewing airwomen. Mixed Sports Night in Rec hall: volleyball and floor hockey were played.

Interests of personnel were divided between outdoor activities, sports night in Rec Hall and the Massey Harris show at Seal Cove.

Ceiling lowered from 3000 to 700 in late morning, rising to about 3000 shortly thereafter and remaining throughout remainder of period. Visibility unlimited.
An evening of whist and bridge in the Canteen. A number of airwomen attended the first "Soo-Suds" dance and reported the event an unqualified success.

Ceiling 2500 to 3000 throughout the day. Visibility varying between 6 and 15 with light continuous rain all day. Winds SE 5 to calm.

27 May 44
Ceiling 2500 to 3500 during period. Visibility 4 to 6 in rain in the morning, becoming cloudy to partly cloudy with visibility over 10 in late afternoon. Winds southwesterly 5.
Posting notice received for 14 supernumerary RTOs. RCAF "Joe Boys" show played in Rec Hall with 29th AA Regt as guests. Very pleasing performance. Joe Boys orchestra supplied music for dance afterwards. The cast was later entertained in Sergeant's Mess.

Protestant and RC Church Services were held in the Rec Hall. A number of airmen and airwomen went mountain climbing. Officers entertained approximately 100 guests at No 4 Detachment's first Mess Party, which was voted a terrrific success.

Softball league game postponed. WD Admin Staff enjoyed an evening out - dinner at the Boston Cafe and a movie - to bid farewell to several WDs on posting. One Clerk Postal posted to No 3 OTU. One Sergeant (C&C) to No 2 Wing HQ and F/S PJ Olson (Foreman of Works) to 34 SFTS, Medicine Hat.

At 1300 hours, Ground Warfare instructor conducted a party of 13 airmen and four officers to Army Rifle Ranges. A further fifteen airmen proceeded to ranges at 1645 hours. Results of the shoot were very good, fifteen men making ninety and over - top scorer, 113, possible 150. Fifty airwomen attended dance at Acropolis Hill. Free Bingo in Rec Hall. "Y" Man completed horseshoe pitch and area for throwing softball.

WD Officers attended a tea this afternoon honouring Mrs Martyn, wife of Col DB Martyn, Army Area Commander. All WDs confined to camp until 2100 hours for the purpose of attending educational classes.

A/V/M FV Heakes, CB, accompanied by S/L R Dobson and S/L WTF Turgis, arrived at 2000 hours by MT from Prince Rupert Station, and returned to that Unit after inspecting the Operations Rooms and visiting the Officers' Mess.

F/L RR Macdonald relinguished command of the Detachment on departing on leave prior to proceeding overseas. G/C PS Secord and G/C EC Luke paid a short visit to the Detachment during the evening. The Personnel Counsellor visited the Station today and interviewed a large number of the personnel. WDs were confined to camp this evening until 2100 hours. A brief meeting was held in the Canteen at 1800 hours, at which time a Dance Committee was appointed, and other matters discussed. Classes in handicrafts, shorthand, typing and sewing followed the meeting. Approximately 10 WDs attended the Prince of Wales Rangers Dance this evening.

Six WDs and two "Wrens" attended tonight's cooking class. Theory and practical work in roasting meat, preparing cream of tomato soup and mayonnaise were covered. The first meeting of the "Knit and Chatter Club" was held in the WD Canteen. It is intended that this evening will be a friendly "get-together" of the WDs on the Station, when everyone will bring needlework, and each person will give instruction to anyone else interested. There were 10 airwomen at tonight's meeting, each of whom expressed her appreciation of such an evening.

A meeting of the Station Fund Committee was held this afternoon in the WD Admin Officer. Large No 4 turnout at the USO Bowling Alley this evening.

The Board of Officers appointed by A/V/m FV Heakes, CB, for the purpose of handing over to the Army temporarily, No 4 Filter Detachment, Accommodation and Equipment, met this afternoon at No 4 Detachment and discussed plans for the transfers.
The Women's Basketball Teams (WDs vs Allies) played a close game this evening in the Seal Cove Gymn. Final score: Allies - 26, WDs - 24. Station Dance this evening was an outstanding success.
