Polling facilities set up in preparation of Alberta Provincial Election, under direction of F/O AD Solomon (CAN)C7181, appointed Deputy Returning Officer for the Unit.

Interview with Captain Casson, OC Kent Reg't, Jordan River re liaison between Army and Air Force on rations, quarters and transportation. Organization of MT for runs between Kildonan House and Belmont Building and other essential runs in the event of transportation strike.

Organization of other services such as electricity, power, rations, in the event of transportation strike affecting other workers besides transit workers. Public Works Department started construction of false wall to close off stairways on 8th floor of Belmont Building, for purpose of security.

Officer Commanding Inspection Parade held at 1630 hours of all day workers and "A" and "C" shift workers. After the OCs parade, the OC accompanied by WDO, made a complete inspection of WD Barracks and Kildonan House.

Sixteen Wireless Operators (Code) reported in from Barriefield, Ontario. posted to this unit for duty with Army, No 3 Special Wireless School. Arrangements made for accommodation in private homes, also their duty to be carried out with the Army.

OC Inspection Parade held at 1630 hours, of all day workers and personnel on "B" and "D" shifts.

Fifteen Officers from BR Controllers' Course at Western Air Command, visited Filter Section and given one and one half hours lecture by OC on Filter Operations plus an hour and a half familiarization in Filter Room. A Valentine Dance was held at Kildonan House from 2030 hours to midnight with No 6 ACH Orchestra supplying the music. A very successful evening's entertainment was the general feeling of all personnel in attendance.

S/L WL Eddy (C5748) Western Air Command Headquarters, visited on Temporary Duty and a full discussion was held with the Adjutant and Orderly Staff on Discharge and Retirement Procedure and documentation; the system and procedure followed at this Unit was thoroughly checked by S/L Eddy, who commented very favourably and no observations or criticism was raised. Inspection and technical adjustments to Radar equipment, X-1 Detachment, Jordan River, was made by F/L WH Hartley, F/L AH Turner and Unit Signals Officer, F/O AD Solomon, effecting improved performance.

F/L WH Hartley carried out observations at Radar Detachment.

A Basketball Game held at HMCS Naden by the Unit WD Basketball team, "The Kildonians" against the Wrens of Givenchy, the unit team winning with a score of 43 to 8. Inspection of Gordon Head W/T Station and PCS Exchange conducted by Signals Officer. New beam antenna in operation at Gordon Head W/T Station; beamed transmission to Nos 9, 26, 27 Radio Units on W/T and/or R/T.

Anzac W/T circuit to New Zealand and Australia at Gordon Head (remotely controlled from WAC) transferred to new transmitting site at Lulu Island, Vancouver (still remotely controlled from WAC). Meeting of Messing Committee held at 1900 hours. S/L VE Gagne (C2154) Senior Equipment Officer, RCAF Station, Patricia Bay, made monthly check of Equipment Section Function.

AFHQ requested Anzac circuit as set up at W/T Station, Gordon Head, be adjusted for transmission on RCAF Intercommand Organization for operation on AFHQ - WAC (A-2) channels for W/T communication to Ottawa. F/S Cummings, Signals, Western Air Command, sent on temporary duty to No 2 Detachment for the purpose of setting up Anzac transmitter AG-10 at Gordon Head W/T Station for transmission to Ottawa. A crew of eight from Coal Harbour, given lecture on Filter and conducted through Operations Room on familiarization.

Inspection of X-1 Detachment, Jordan River, carried out be S/L Mills, OC, S/L RD Hansen (C8936) WAC Radio Officer, and F/O AD Solomon, Unit Sigs-Radar Officer. Favourable comment expressed on operation of equipment.

F/L ADH Turner (CAN C7179) No 2 TSU Penhold, Alta, visited on TD on return from Nos 13 and 33 Radio Units. S/L Hansen and S/L Branson ceased TD and departed at 1800 hours. Handicraft Display exhibit set up in Canteen, Belmont Building, creating much interest. S/L WA Garland (C11667) proceeded on TD at WAC at 2359 hours. S/L AL Mills (C3229) assumes command No 2 Detachment effective this date. Full Committee set up under direction of F/L HM Bell (C8854) as Chairman, to promote the unit in the Annual Red Cross Campaign which commenced this date.

Confidential documents being made in preparation for handing over from S/L WA Garland to new OC, S/L AL Mills. Personnel from 9 CMU inspected antenna masts on roof of Belmont Bldg to determine requirements of labour and material in preparation for replacement work to start 12-Mar-45. Basketball Game held at RCAF Station, Patricia Bay, between the Unit WD Basketball Team and Pat Bay WD Team, the No 2 Detachment Team winning with a score of 18-15.

S/L WJ MacLeod (CAN C9606) reported on TD from EAC accompanied by F/L HR Sinclair (C8666) from AFHQ for conference re compilation of Filter Room Standing Orders and instructions. These were completed and forwarded to AFHQ for approval. Handicraft work being shipped to Vancouver in preparation for WAC Arts and Crafts Exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery to be held March 17th to April 5th, 1945. S/L AL Mills, OC, returned from TD at RCAF Station, Sea Island, at 0830 hours. F/L HM Bell relinquishes Temporary Command.

F/L EG Kelly (CAN C3646) reported on TD from No 2 TSU for purpose of determining calibration requirements of Radar Units WAC. F/O WHC Beckett (C14157) reported from No 3 RD on TD to install and test Radar Beacon on roof of Belmont Building. S/L BG Johnson (C4717) ceased TD and departed for WAC Vancouver at 0845 hours. Canteen Committee reconstituted on posting of F/O AD Solomon (CAN C7181), S/ HV Barker-Benfield (V30503) appointed President and P/O ED Campbell (J86344) Vice-President.

F/L EG Kelly (CAN C3646) Calibration Officer on TD from No 2 TSU Penhold, vistied No 7 RU Patricia Bay, to determine calibration requirements of that Unit. F/O WHC Beckett (C14157) Radar Officer No 3 RD completed installation of ASU Radar Beacon on top of Belmont Bldg and is now ready for aircraft tests. The Protestant Padre made his weekly visit. S/L WJ MacLeod and F/L HR Sinclair reported back from TD at 1250 hours from Silver Lake Operations, Seattle, Wash, and continued TD at this Unit.

F/L EG Kelly (CAN C3646) departed for WAC on ceasing TD this Unit. F/O Beckett awaiting aircraft to test Radar Beacon on roof of Belmont Bldg. S/L WH Hardie (C5404) Command Educational Officer visited on TD and conferred with OC, Adjutant, and WDO on Educational services and policy. Satisfaction was expressed on the efforts of this Detachment despite the fact that due to function the major portion of Personnel are employed on a shift basis.

OC accompanied by Unit Sigs-Radar Officer conducted inspection of Gordon Head W/T Station. F/L HM Bell, Chairman of Unit Committee for Red Cross Campaign reports encouragement. S/L NJ Moran (C5675) and class of 14 officers reported on TD at 0830 hours from No 2 School of Fighter Control, RCAF Station, Sea Island, BC, for familiarization of Filter and AA Defences for period of two days.

The Educational Officer, RCAF Station Patricia Bay, spent the day at the unit on Educational Services. S/L WJ MacLeod and F/L HR Sinclair completed tour of TD and departed at 2359 hours. Lecture given to Class of 14 officers from No 2 School of F/C by Sigs-Radar Officer on "Signals - Its association with Filter". W/O WM Taylor (V30031) (AFHQ) WDO accompanied by S/O JT Cameron (V30011)(WAC)WDO visited on TD to conduct inspection of airwomen, accommodation, and give lectures to WD Officers and Airwomen on welfare, discipline and morale, etc. The inspecting officers expressed satisfaction and commented on the situation at this unit.

Two RAF HF Receivers R.1155 received for special tests to be conducted at this Detachment on Radio Unit R/T Telling circuits.

High winds in gale proportions disrupted landline communications to up-Island Radio Units, RT communications brought into effect. S/O RE Partington (V30647) WDO proceeded on TD to WAC HQ, Vancouver, for conference of all Unit WDOs being conducted by W/O WM Taylor AFHQ and S/O JT Cameron, Command WDO.

S/L WA Garland (C11667) ceased TD at WAC and returned at 0700 hours. Unit Dance held at Crystal Gardens 2030 to 0030 hours. Music supplied by Naden (Navy) Orchestra. This being the regular monthly dance for the Unit, the affair was well attended by all personnel and a very successful evening's entertainment was the sentiment of all.

Special Meeting of Station Fund Committee held at 1500 hours, attended by the OC for the purpose of appointing a nominating committee to receive nominations of personnel to reconsitute all Institute Committees. A Special Meeting of Canteen Committee was also held at 1000 hours. First news received at 0730 hours of the surrender of Germany, Unit Program immediately brought into effect and personnel off shift and all day workers reported to Kildonan House (WD Barracks), for organized sports and entertainment throughout the balance of afternoon and evening; the program of entertainment kept personnel well occupied and off the city streets, a good supply of refreshments were available and dancing continued until 0130 hours, a very enjoyable time was had by all ranks.

A wedding reception was held at Kildonan House WD Barracks, followed by dancing.

The WD Sports teams of Kildonan House attended the Interservice Track and Sports Meet at Work Point Barracks and participated in the women's Track and Field Competition; the Unit teams carried off aggregate honours and won the Whitney Challenge Cup, running under colours of the Royal Canadian Air Force, amassing 23 points. The CWACs were second place with 20 pts, and the WRCNS in third place with eleven pts, RCAF Station, Patricia Bay, finishing fourth place with seven pts. Lynne Whitney, infant daughter of Ex-F/L Brock Whitney, local jeweler and donor of the Whitney Cup and five Championship Medals, presented the silverware to F/S FE Murray, Captain of the Kildonan House team, and winners of the 50, 75, and 100 yards, broad jump and high jump. F/L HM Bell, acting Commanding Officer, accompanied by Adjutant and two WD Officers, on invitation of the Commanding Officer and Officers of RCAF Station, Patricia Bay, attended the Premier showing in Western Canada of the film "Son of Lassie" at 1600 hrs, followed by a reception in the Officers' Mess.

Commanding Officer's Inspection Parade held on lawn at Kildonan House, WD Barracks, at 1900 hours, consisting of all personnel available off shift duty and day workers, including Officers, airmen and airwomen. Total number on parade - Officers 5, WD Officers 8, other Ranks 93. On this occasion FL HM Bell, acting CO, assisted by the Adjutant, presented certificates and decorations to F/O HL McKenzie C35934 Unit Signals Officer and W301617 Sgt Volhoffer OM (Chef) both of whom were mentioned in Despatches in recent Honours and Awards list. The photographer from RCAF Stn, Pat Bay was present to take pictures of the presentation ceremony by kind permission of the CO of that station; a period of ceremonial drill instructions was also given by the Adjutant, conforming to WAC Instruction 12-9-1 (PT&D) d/31-May-45. First Official News received at 1630 hours of the surrender of Japan; Unit programme immediately brought into effect and all personnel off shift and day workers proceeded to Kildonan House to participate in entertainment provided for the evening. Personnel were kept well occupied and off the city streets. A good supply of refreshments were available and dancing continued until 0130 hours and an enjoyable time was had by all ranks with no incidents which might reflect upon conduct of personnel of the Unit. Skeleton shifts maintained in Filter Section to take care of operational commitments.
