[DFC Ribbon] Distinguished Flying Cross - No. 408 Squadron

Award effective 10 May 1945 as per London Gazette dated 22 May 1945 and AFRO 1147/45 dated 13 July 1945. American in the RCAF; born 1919 in Boulder, Colorado; home there (lineman). Enlisted in Windsor, Ontario, 19 December 1941. Trained at No. 5 ITS (graduated 20 June 1942), No. 10 EFTS (graduated 9 October 1942) and No. 2 SFTS (graduated 19 February 1943). Commissioned 1943. No citation other than "completed...numerous operations against the enemy in the course of which [he has] invariably displayed the utmost fortitude, courage and devotion to duty". DHist file 181.009 D.1515 (RG.24 Vol.20600) has recommendation dated 1 February 1945 when he had flown 33 sorties (161 hours 15 minutes), 7 August to 28 December 1944.

Flying Officer Johnson has completed a tour of operations on heavy bombers as pilot. During his tour he has flown over many heavily defended targets such as Kiel, Sterkrade, Dortmund and Duisburg.

Throughout his tour he has at all times displayed a fine offensive spirit and has pressed home his attacks with exceptional coolness and determination. On each and every occasion he has been more than anxious to come to grips with the enemy and his conduct on operations has been exemplary.
