Heavy rains, inclement weather for all flying operations. Little or no flying carried out. Runway conditions are such that when runway is subject to rain, the minute particles of clay and powered concrete form a thick scum. It is an operational hazard for all aircraft. CO’s conference held at 1100 hours at which matters of various topics were discussed. Final arrangements completed for Coronation Parade.

2 Jun 53

Attached is the CO’s address which was distributed by Air Division HQ for use at the Coronation Parade. Parade was concluded and dismissed just in time to avoid prolonged rain showers which lasted all day. Station stand-down followed the Parade.

3 Jun 53

Lowered clouds and hail and rain showers. No flying due to poor weather and slippery runways. Three T-33, Silver Star, aircraft arrived from Canada for transfer to 3 (F) Wing as part of an Instrument Training School to be initiated there in the near future. The aircraft came over the route previously used by Leap Frog hops. The aircraft were piloted by F/L K Thornycroft, F/L Crawford, F/O Smith and F/O Christie. They reported an excellent trip. At 1050 hours Sabre 19365 piloted by F/O JG Cloutier, 421 (F) Squadron was reported to be missing in the area of Benestroff. GCA had contact with him about 12 miles out when he disappeared. An immediate search and farmer’s report, plus an Expeditor search plane located aircraft 19365 in a small lake, the pilot’s canopy and helmet were found about ½ mile before the lake giving us hope that he had bailed out. An intensive search by over 150 men followed after lunch. A systematic approach was formed, in a line tangent with the aircraft’s last line of flight. Many men were up to their waists in slime and marsh searching the shallower parts of an adjacent lake. F/O Cloutier was found in a wheat field on a slight rise of ground, still strapped to his seat. He was evidently too low to do anything, and must have been killed instantly. His parachute "D" ring was out but his parachute unopened. The body was removed to the Station Hospital and arrangements made for the funeral. Mrs. J Cloutier, wife of the deceased living on the unit at the trailer site was informed. Overcast weather, intermittent showers. Operation "Coronet" went into force. Internal security is very strict and the arrival and departure of personnel on and off the unit is rigidly controlled. The Exercise having commenced, little or nothing was evidenced except that a Meteor presumably of the enemy support, made a successful reconnaissance over the aerodrome and took photographs. A small concentration of French Army troops were reported outside the perimeter area but their presence indicated nothing of important military value.

24 Jul 53

Excellent weather – CAVU after 0900 hours. Exercise "Coronet" now considerable activity amongst the squadrons who were airborne after 0645 hours. Although available and alert at 0400 hours, flying was impeded due to heavy concentrations of ground fog in the area. Two Meteors Mk VII of the enemy forces made sneak reconnaissance attacks and photographed the unit. They crept in close to the ground and local topography prevented them from showing on the GCA radar scope. However, once they were seen, they were pursued very fast by members of 430 Squadron. The mock war is creating considerable interest and all personnel actively engaged in the maneuver are pursuing their duties with keen interest. It is anticipated that a number of NATO officials will eventually visit the unit and review the progress of the exercise. S/L HE Murphy, Spec/Messing, Air Division, F/L G Stantial, Spec/Mess, Air Division and F/L D Pope SOPA/3 Air Division, visited the unit on TD and routine staff visit. 25 Jul 53

Station again attacked by enemy.

26 Jul 53

Overcast weather – clearing with light rain and cooler. As early as 0600 hours, enemy aircraft involved in Operation "Coronet" visited the unit. It is possible, if not intercepted by anti-aircraft fire they were eliminated by aircraft this unit. However, the aircraft on the offensive and defensive put on an excellent demonstration of airmanship and aerobatics. However, final assessment will not be known until the two umpires from AAFCE HQ make their report. The unit observed a full working day; security was strict and probing.

27 Jul 53

Cool, overcast, slight rain. Aircraft engaged in Operation "Coronet" took off around 0530 hours but inclement weather caused by rain with the resultant hazardous runway. The enemy aircraft failed to make an appearance today; however, reports have it that a "gaggle" was enroute, totalling possibly 20, and due to navigation became lost. The CO’s conference was held today as usual. The main topic of discussion was the deployment of 2 (F) Wing, Exercise "Great Trek", to 3 (F) Wing, pending runway repairs. They returned to base at 1830 hours.

29 Jul 53

Excellent weather, light overcast, sunny and hot followed by cool weather in the evening. The deployment of the squadrons and Wing Maintenance under code "Great Trek", occupy secondary importance to Operation "Coronet". A "gaggle" of 10 RAF Sabres attempted to "bomb" the unit. They were preceded by a decoy of four F-84’s but aircraft this unit quickly rallied to the ambush and a lively and interesting dog fight ensued.
