1958 - Morhange Pub - Don Norrie

We frequented this pub in Morhange as it was on the main highway which led to Metz. One hot Saturday afternoon in July 1958, a farmer was leading his horse down the road in front of the pub, when a Citroen travelling at a high rate of speed (did the French ever drive slow) hit the horse, which hit the owner and killed him. The horse had to be put down later. The driver, who was not injured, came into the pub and called the Gendarmes. Little attention was paid to the victim or his suffering horse. They all exchanged niceties, shook hands, had a beer, then decided to investigate the accident. Talk about casual!
