BBC booked broadcast direct to Canada (live). CO spoke for 1 1/2 minutes, LAC Tupper spoke for 1 minute on the behalf of all airmen. Commentator was Air Correspondent Charles Gardneer of the BBC.

Routine. Last day of New Years Leave. (5 days). CO held forum.

3 Jan 1952

All Airmen and Officers back to full time regular duties.

AVM DM Smith visited Station. Inspected Guard of Honour.

6 Feb 1952

Dark and heavily overcast. No flying, one test flight. Balance of pilots engaged in self tuition on operating notes and Aircraft recognition. Information received His Majesty the King has succumbed. Official mourning proclaimed and all units entertainment cancelled.

7 Feb 1952

Excellent flying weather. A percentage of 410 (F) Sqn personnel detailed to attend funeral at London. F/O RK Johnson proceeded on TD to RAF Stn Filton near Bristol with F-86 aircraft, Technical Matters. Elizabeth II assumes reign of the Empire. Mr W Matheson, Tech: Representative of Canadair discussed various aspects in a report he is preparing. Night Flying cancelled.

8 Feb 1952

Excellent weather prevailed. All flights on interceptor detail. Qualifying Examinations results in for Corporals and Flight Sergeants, all passed with exception of 3. This is good percentage dispite abnormal conditions encountered on writing on HMCS Magnificient. Ceremonial Parade held at 1600 hrs in front of HQ Admin Building. 410 (F) Sqn was No. 3 Sqn under S/L Hall. Oath of Allegiance to Queen Elizabeth II. General salute.

Air Exercise arrangd by Eastern Sector cancelled. 410 (F) Sqn were to have taken part in this exercise and were alerted: for unseen reason cancelled.

11 Feb 1952

Overcast day. Reasonably mild. Pilots engaged in Air to Ground firing practice, RAF Holbeach near the Wash. Usual flying take off-seg: GCA etc. carried out. New work hours for all 1 (F) Wing personnel include 410 (F) Sqn, namely 0745 to 1645 daily, Monday to Friday. Saturday still holiday, commencing today.

12 Feb 1952

Favourable weather condition. Aircrew engaged in Air-Ground firing practice at RAF Holbeach. F/L RP St. John proceeded on TD to NATO HQ Paris to attend Armament conference. Accompanied by S/L Bain, Wing Arm O.

13 Feb 1952

Favourable weather conditions. Cold and frosty. Visibility: 2000 yds. Air to Ground Firing at Holbeach cancelled. Local flying. Serviceability of aircraft low due to small perc. of spares available. 9 aircraft AOG due to no spares. Radios trouble: Comm. unserv. in aircraft. F/O CM Campbell, Sqn Adjt relieving at Wing HQ Adjt F/L Townley. Mr. John Darry, Chief Test Pilot for De Havilland Air. Co. Ltd. for familiarization flight with F-86 aircraft on 410 (F) Squadron. Establishment. The RCAFA made a presentation of cash to S/L MacKenzie for the 441 Sqn to use as they see fit. (given while on the Empress of France.) Rough crossing. At 1215 20 Feb 52 landed at Liverpool. 2210 hours at North Luffenham. 410 gave a warm welcome, drinks on the house.

14 Feb 1952

Heavy snow. Visibility 200 yards. OC reported that morales of the Airmen needed a little uplifting in view of few promotions for 410 F Sqn. Suggested Officers more compatible with the Airmen with a view to appreciating their work. Plans for Officers and their wives to visit London Mar 14th to see the "South Pacific" at Drury Lane.

15 Feb 1952

Squadron, Station Stand Down. No aircraft flying between 0600 and 0600 hrs the following day. Late King George VI funeral in London. Full Ceremonial Drumhead parade for all personnel at 0800 hrs, respective Chaplains conducted Divine Service. No work progressed after parade.

Weather not favourable at 0800 hrs but improved later. Squadron Wing visited by Air Marshal Sir B Embrey KBE DSO (3 Bars) AOC Fighter Command. Courtesy visit only. Sir Basil was most interesting, being himself a pilot. Luncheon accompanied by G/C B Cross, Sector Commander Eastern Sector Personal Staff Officer. 12 planes airborne in 44 seconds.

19 Feb 1952

Visibility 3 miles. Routine practice flying only. Lecture by Met. Officer: Plans for future entertainments of 441 (F) Sqn due in 20 February 1952. F/O CM Campbell proceeded to Liverpool, disembarking 29 Officers, 126 airmen, 43 dependents. Dependents of F/L G Nichols are arriving on draft, he proceeded to Liverpool to help in their disembarkation.

20 Feb 1952

Routine, flying weather good. 441 (F) Sqn (Silver Fox) arrived Liverpool on SS Empress of France. Departed by road arriving at North Luffenham at 2330 hrs. Informal reception tendered by 410 (F) Sqn.

21 Feb 1952

441 reported in. Weather favourable. Local flying. Night flying will be expected, 1630 briefing was held. Night Flying Operations commenced at 1930 hrs 1937 hrs. Sabre a/c 19180 crash landed at the Button runway 26. Category 'D'. Pilot F/O DJ Morrison unhurt. 2005 hrs. Sabre 19122 crash landed in same area. F/O RM Knox-Leet unhurt. Category 'A'. Concluded night flying for the evening.

22 Feb 1952

Semi-favourable weather. Local flying. Damaged aircraft being removed off runway. Wrecking crane obtained from 40 MU RAF Hillercate. Both considerable damage. Three officers S/L MacKenzie, F/L Kelly, F/O DB Simmons were notified of investigation duties pertaining to two Sabre accidents which occured during the previous evenings flying.

Eclipse of the Sun 100% was observed in North Africa. Gloomy appearance at 0800 hrs. Local flying. AC S/L LA Hall attended conference at Sector Command HQ Horsham, St. Faith. 23.5 hrs was logged in flying. Qualifying Examinations for F/L's, 3 Officers competing. F/O CM Campbell appointed Squadron PRO. Leicester Evening Mail Newsman on Wing and various areas. Lecture by Met man Mr. MacFarland. Annual B2 medical on pilots carried out.

26 Feb 1952

Small Arms training commenced. Pilots engaged in this Service Training. F/O D Morrison is high man and very high scores. Anti-Cyclone conditions exists. Flying. Hit 400 hours mark soon. F/L's are writing their Qualifying Examinations in the Airmens Reading Rooms. S/L MacKenzie made first flight of the Squadron but returned as it came in foggy. In the afternoon, W/C RTP Davidson, COpsO gave a lecture on procedures and the use of RT. He expressed his desire for results and proposed a monthly aim of 500 hours flying time for the 441 Sqn.

27 Feb 1952

Warm weather. OC engaged in Staff College Exams. Air Commodore Costello Air Members on a routine visit from CJS London England. Pilots engaged in painting their insignias and marking areas pertinent to 410 (F) Sqn. S/L MacKenzie called the complete Squadron together and had a talk on deportment while in England. The Squadron Sign was mounted outside Flight Room and the PRO was there to take pictures and notes.

Heavy fog all day. General work in 441 Hangar.

29 Feb 1952

Weather held up the flying in the morning. Six pilots were airborne in the afternoon. F/O had receiver trouble and was unable to "Home" to Base. He landed the aircraft safely and landed at Halton, Halesworth, East Anglia. F/O Walker left with a servicing party.

1 Mar 1952

F/O Brine returned in Sabre 155 around 1430 hours. Flying time for 441 initial familiarization trips 7 hours 50 mins with a maximum of four serviceable aircraft on Friday.

3 Mar 1952

Weather conditions favourable. Sqn exceed over 400 hrs for the month of February. Affiliation with exercises with Canberra Aircraft from RAF Binbrook was not very successful due to communication difficulties with that Unit encountered. Sabre a/c 19157 landed by F/O FE Sylvester suffered damage to the aspirator. As the Sabre exceeded 400 hours, it now falls on the Officers to tender an informal party to the Sqn Personnel. In the morning F/O Chilcott gave a lecture on QGH and GCA. Sector Recces were flown all day and the pilots had their initial look at England and the use of the radio facilities in the area. Flew 19:25 hours.

4 Mar 1952

Weather conditions favourable. Pilots kept busy on Flying tactics. More affiliation with Canberras but still certain defects enter the exercise which still not ensure success. Stacked up 24:45 hours on Formation, Sector Recces, QGH and GCA. One machine had a major U/S with nose gear trouble but serviceability stayed very high during the day. Sqn party for all personnel.

5 Mar 1952

Rain prevailed from 0800 hrs till 1030 hrs. Nil flying. Wing Parade held today at which 410 F participated as No. 2 Sqn. S/L RA Poile (Langcroft) visited Unit and discussed various matters on Operation Combat and Communication methods. Air Cadet Squadron from Coul visited the Squadron and were given a tour of familiarization by F/O Broadbent, Sqn Asst ACLO. Several Officers from Army present to co-ordinate details with our Sqn for its participation in a ground defence exercise. The Topic of Ground Defence is becoming increasingly apparent as to its need and it can be expected that more attention and importance will be diverted towards this field. Commanding Officer's Parade at North Luffenham was dampened by rain but went off successfully. Flying started after an early lunch but the time was low for the day. With two aircraft unserviceable out of five, we put in 10:50 hours. An English Air Cadet Squadron went on a conducted tour of our hangar and aircraft with a few of our pilots from 441.

6 Mar 1952

Six aircraft up after Met. briefing with S/L MacKenzie leading the first formation. On return to the Base and during the landing, #4 had engine trouble when trying to overshoot. F/O EN Ronaasen, the Pilot, was forced to land due to lack of power and following touch down, his engine burst into flame burning completely through aft fuselage section. He did an excellent job of controlling his Sabre past the others ahead of him on the runway and braked to a stop off the end of "28". He was unhurt. With the passing of a warm front our flying was washed out and we gathered for a Lecture on GCA by F/L Freeman. Flying time: 6:15 hours.

Good weather and the first 441 Wing Show in the morning. After a briefing by W/C Davidson, seven 441 pilots led by S/L MacKenzie "pushed tits" at 1000 hours. One machine returned with nose door trouble in flight, and another returned from the button with brake failure. Show was good. First combined operation of 441 and 410 Squadrons. In the afternoon a similar show was carried out. S/L Mackenzie and F/L Kelly did the first night flying and were really impressed. Weather closed around 2200 hrs and flying ceased. Flying time: 17:05 hrs.

11 Mar 1952

A good day with 23:10 hours flown on high-level formation, QGH, GCA, tail chases, and calibration with a Canberra. Night flying was laid on but fog washed it out.

12 Mar 1952

Officer Commanding's Parade in the morning and a dense fog grounded all a/c. The pilots received a lecture on GCI for 441 by S/L Port who is in charge at Langcroft. All Officers assembled in the Officer's Lounge for a lecture by Maj. Jabara of the USAF. He was deeply impressed and impressed everyone with his description of Jet Battles over Korea and stressed the need for more flying experience at speeds around .95. His lecture was under the auspices of SHAPE HQ Paris and was attended by a number of guests from various RAF units as well as from Air Ministry in London. All agreed that he delivered an excellent lecture.

13 Mar 1952

Seven formation trips flown on high-altitude and high-speed work. We flew another calibration trip with a Canberra, QGH, and two navigation trips. Flying time went up to 27:45 hours for today. North Luffenham was a veritable "Mecca" for various types of aircraft and nationals today, 4 USAF F-86 As from Leimbuck, Noah, Deal & Bemis visited the Unit; a Canberra from Bimbrooke; a Lincoln from Manby and a Meteor from an RAF Fighter Unit were visiting. Officials from Air Ministry were here concerning photos's and silhouettes of F-86E for official publications. Various officials from Army and Army Force HQ London were on hand inspecting the aircraft.

14 Mar 1952

Excellent weather but serviceability on aircraft low. 441 flew on two different fly-past for Air Ministry Cameraman and a group of English Air Scouts. Other flying consisted of general exercise but the number of unserviceable aircraft kept our time down to 16:00 hours. Affiliation and Liasion flight being arranged to Rheims, France. COpsO leading a gaggle of 6 Sabres from 410 Sqn.

No flying. Total flying for week: 84:00 hours.

17 Mar 1952

Fog until 1100 hours, then cloudy weather for rest of the day. Ground firing washed out due to radio failure on range. Canberra in from Bimbrooke to do affiliated work with Sabre. North Star in from Canada for couple of hours. The Sqn (410) Cougar Kitten from City of Vancouver was on board, and was brought out for exercise. Photo taken. It was then taken to London to the Zoo.

18 Mar 1952

Weather poor for flying. Visibility was down all AM due to fog and haze and in the PM flying had to be scrubbed due to both tower transmitters being U/S. A short but good Air Show was put on late in the afternoon by F/L Dean Kelly of 441 Sqn for visiting Air Cadets. F/L Lamb from Horsham called in to check with S/L Hallon re the monthly flying report.

19 Mar 1952

Weather very poor. No flying. CO's parade held at 0800 hrs. Short parade. All pilots instructed to report to Wing Op's room after parade. W/C Davidson gave briefing on the exercise from the afternoon - a paper chase. They reported to the Mess in old clothes and running shoes at 1000 hrs. Were taken by bus 4 1/2 to 5 miles from Station and set off on foot. Trail set by W/C Davidson and F/O Himmelman who had about 15 to 20 minutes start. All were back in the bar in an hour to an hour and a half. Stand down from flying in the afternoon. 441 Sqn had a Birthday Party in the bar - one year since their reforming.

20 Mar 1952

Flying washed out in the AM due to clouds. Cleared by noon, and a good half days flying in the afternoon. Some Flight Cadets and Officers visiting us from Cranwell, inspecting the a/c in the morning, for a couple of hours. F/O Morrison and Marion did a fly past for them about 1630 hrs.

21 Mar 1952

Good flying day, first this week, CAVU in AM, and only thin cloud and haze moving in during the afternoon. Sqns were doing Air to Ground firing at Holbeach Range all day. Last flight off at 1625. A Lancaster on a training trip from Summerside PEI stopped in over noon to refuel. Squadron preparing for Com and exercises tomorrow if the weather permits. Hope to have 11 a/c serviceable for 410 Squadron.

22 Mar 1952

Light rain and cloud in the AM but weather cleared in the AM. Work started at 1000 hours. 4 Test Flights on a/c and a/c fuelled and DI'd and towed to ORP. Met briefing for Pilots at 1200 hr. Wing in readiness at 1330 hours. 22 a/c airborne in 6 1/2 minutes. W/C Davidson flew with 441 Sqn and G/C Hale flew with 410 Sqn. Successfully intercepted 30 incoming Bombers (American B-29) flying in formation in 3 boxes at 22,000'. The Wing broke off and reformed over Sculthorpe beacon and came into base. The second scramble was at 1740 hrs, and the wing got airborne with 16 a/c, 9 from 410 and 7 from 441. Intercepted B-50's and Lincolns. Total Flying: 25:50 Weekly Flying: 55:15 hours.

24 Mar 1952

Poor day for flying. Flying cancelled due to risk of Cu Nimbs and poor visibility. Pilots spent the day cleaning and polishing the a/c. At 1645 a film on the Grey Cup Final 1951 was shown in the Pilots room for officers and men to see.

25 Mar 1952

Quarterly inspection of buildings completed. In the morning a solid overcast layer about 1500'. The Sqn carried out low level (300 ft) navigation trips during the morning. 12 trips were made. Regular formation flying carried out in the afternoon. About 30 good hours flying put in.

26 Mar 1952

Commanding Officer's parade and Forum in the morning and during the afternoon the Pilots sprayed our checkerboard strip around the nose of our Sabres. No flying. Routine flying operation carried out. Weather was overcast but suitable for flying. CO inspection today and squadron presented a good impression. S/L LA Halpin, AMAS/Org - Establishments, visited the Sqn and discussed establishment increases in E TEch (A) trade. The duty free liquor from Canada came in effect today and Sqn representatives from all Messes attended organizational meetings.

27 Mar 1952

Sabre aircraft 19194 departed for Bristol Aircraft Company for fly in repair. Weather conditions favourable. In the AM during formation flight F/O TB Lauzon became confused and landed at RAF Stn Binbrook where he crashed in to fence on stopping. He was uninjured. Due to snow storm all flying was cancelled. S/L LA Hall member on promotion board for officers and commissioning from the ranks board. F/L Prince proceeded via GMT with crew personnel to determine the damage to Sabre a/c 19135 which is at present at RAF Stn Binbrook. "A" Flight made a trip to Langcroft which is similar to the one made by "B" Flight on the 24th. Flying time: 16:35 hours.

28 Mar 1952

Cold, overcast and high wind. Nil flying operations. F/O AE Rayner proceeded on TD to Bristol Co Ltd Filton to bring back an a/c F-86 which had completed a major overhaul. The company has the contract from Canadair to complete all such overhauls. Central Maintenance system has been in effect now good for a period of 10 days or more and with the exception of minor difficulties which are negligible the system is proving satisfactory. Plans are being made for an Escape and Evasion course next month during which members of both squadrons will participate. A limited number of trips got away and four aircraft led by S/L MacKenzie flew to Rentwater making a visit to the Americans. F/O Ecker lost a port drop tank near Marham and the incident was reported to the Tower. No damage was done to the a/c. Time for the day: 12:00 hrs.

Saturday. No flying.

30 Mar 1952

Sunday and no flying. Weekly flying total: 66:45 hours.

31 Mar 1952

Flying at approx 1000 hours. S/L Mackenzie and F/O PC Walker returned from Rentwaters followed by F/O DB Simmons and F/O EN Ronaasen in the afternoon. The latter were held up by unserviceabilities. High speed exercises flown and one section had practice on radar fixes. Flying time: 19:35 hours.

Chief of Air Staff, RCAF, Air Marshal WA Curtis expcted to visit Wing this coming week and everyone busily engaged in completing work prior to his arrival.

Flying Operations commenced at 1000 hrs but a/c were dispersed to RAF Stn Marham as were a/c from Stn Marham dispersed to this unit. W/C J Oxspring, S/L Van Fowler and F/L J Schultz from RAF West Raynham visited unit on a liaison visit.

1 April 1952

Eight Sabres off on a practice Wing show in conjunction with 410 Squadron. The Fly Past will be on April 16 when the Chief of the Air Staff visits our base. F/O Ronaasen, after receiving a bad homing, landed at Ansty when his fuel ran low. The airport is used as an EFTS with RAF Chipmunks and the Sabre caused a great commotion among the personnel. A few of our men under F/O Walker drove to the base and after removing the drop tanks, Ronaasen flew back to North Luffenham. The runway he used at Ansty was 3300 feet. Flying time: 22:40 hrs.

2 April 1952

More good weather, at least until noon. CO's inspection after which a review of wing ceremonial was carried out by all 1 F Wing personnel. For the first practice it went very well, only the addition of a drum or band would greatly improve the cadence and marching. However it is felt that by the time the CAS arrives on the 16th the irregularities will be ironed out. C Ops O (W/C Davidson) had another fly past practice today in which pilots from the two Sqns took part. A great improvement in the formation was noticed. Sports afternoon for those who could be spared as well as clothing parade for airmen. Weather in the afternoon was overcast interspersed with rain and a short period of sunshine. Not conducive for good flying operations.

3 Apr 1952

Flying conditions favourable, considerable overcast but clear and with sunny periods. F/O DJ Morrison proceeded by air to RAF Horsham St. Faith to demonstrate the F-86E Sabre Aircraft to representatives of an RAF Staff College. An air interceptor exercise was held between Sabre aircraft of 441 and 410 Sqns, against a gaggle of Vampire a/c from a unit in Eastern Sector which proved satisfactory. Sqn party was held in old Cpl's Bar Club for 410 F personnel.

4 Apr 1952

Overcast, increasing winds but satisfactory for flying operations which were carried out locally. Guard of Honour being drilled for visit of RCAF CAS.

Heavy drizzle and fog settled. This curtailed flying for both Squadrons. Pilots engaged in painting insignias on their respective aircraft. At 1130 hrs it cleared and with the exception of a slight wind permitted flying operations. Practice fly past carried out in view of the CAS contemplated visit next week. Numerous requests, five in all, with possible more in the offing have been received from airmen requesting permission to marry British Nationals. New policy from AFHQ in quite definite cut. Prequisited of the order must be adhered under restrictions. Hoped that night flying operations will be carried out if weather permissible. Guards of Honour busily drilling for CAS visit. ATC North Star arrived from Canada via London with W/C C Mussells and other ATC officials to survey the facilities available at Stornway, Scotland for the flying over of 439 F Squadron which is due in May 52.

8 Apr 1952

Night flying operations effected last night until 0030 hrs today under most superb weather conditions. Moon was full and visibility was excellent for NF operations. Weather at 0800 hrs was foggy and considerable light precipitation evident. This unfavourable weather continued all day. Large representative group of Officers of RAF attached to Air Ministry and Ministry Production visited the unit to discuss various aspects associated with F-86E. Also Mr. T Davis, European representative of Canadair, visited unit on inspection duties. North Star departed this unit for Knloss, Scotland with party of AFHQ and AMCHQ officials, who are studying the problem associated with the movement of 439 (F) Sqn scheduled for 17th May 1952. F/L HWD Prince accompanied this party and will act as Service Liaison Officer on this airlift. F/L RP St. John departed on TD for USAF AFB Brinkwaters on armament liaison visit. Lecture on functions of gyro compass given by Mr. R Webb, Tech Rep of Sperry Gyroscope to all pilots. Weather unsuitable for night flying operations which were cancelled.

9 Apr 1952

Excellent weather, CAVO but steady wind blowing. CO's inspection held and review of wing ceremonial occupied the major portion of the morning. Due to this requirement preparatory to CAS visit, the flying operations were detained preportionately. A mess meeting in afternoon was further cause for low daily flying hours. However at 1430 hrs aircraft of 410 Sqn and 441 Sqn together with 3 American aircraft practised fly past performance. F/L FD Broadbent, Air Cadet Liaison Officer, attended a graduation of flight cadets at RAF College Cranwell with F/L J Peden. F/O D Morrison selected for jet instrument course at West Raynham. Weather foremost not favourable for night flying operations.

10 Apr 1952

Heavy cloud and overcast. 20 mph wind which was warm and not cold. Another practice of wing ceremonial.

14 Apr 1952

Easter Monday. No flying.

15 Apr 1952

Not much flying today as a maximum effort is being made to have all aircraft serviceable for the visit of the Chief of the Air Staff tomorrow. F/O IR Macdonald visited the USAF Station at Shepherds Grove to pick-up "Gen" on a cine-film assessing.

16 Apr 1952

OC attended CO's Wed AM Conference. This will be his last prior to his departure to Korea on a months TD. The entire camp is in a state of flurry with the impending visit of CAS. The hangars and Officers plus aircraft are all being cleaned and everything made in readiness for his visit which is scheduled at 1500 hrs. At 1500 hrs CAS accompanied by AOC TC and Air Member CJS London with entourage arrived and inspected personnel, as well as received wing ceremonial, CAS congratulated all. A formal Mess dinner was tendered CAS that evening.

17 Apr 1952

An excellent day for flying which was undertaken. Acting CO W/C Davidson ordered a Stn Stand Down in appreciation of excellent demonstration before CAS.

18 Apr 1952

Another excellent flying day and all flying personnel took advantage to enjoy a flight. Routine work only. At 1500 hrs 9 aircraft of 410 Sqn took off on a formation flight and in the course of the exercise F/O Kerr and F/O Rayner were killed as a result of a mid-air collision.

A fall of gloom has temporarily settled over the Squadron as a result of the fatal accident to F/O Rayner and F/O Kerr. Both Officers were found and lay in the Skegness Mortuary where official identification and the post mortem was conducted. Funeral arrangements were completed. F/L HWD Prince had a crew of Technical airmen at RAF Wainfleet Bombing Observation station from where they proceeded to the Wash to locate the missing and crashed aircraft. Both or parts of them were readily located and identified. Classified equipment was removed on action by F/L RP St. John.

22 Apr 1952

The squadron stood down, i.e. temp. whilst officers and airmen attended the funeral of the late F/O A Rayner and F/O Kerr. The bodies were transported under escort of F/O D Broadbent from Skegness where they were placed in their respective chapels, the night prior to the funeral. Whilst there, they lay-in-state, under guard of officers of 410 Sqn and 441 Sqn. At 0900 hours on 22 Apr a requiem high Mass was solemnized by S/L JP Davignon. Funeral parade was in command of F/O M MacInnies. Chief mourners for F/O Kerr were S/L MacKenzie (441), S/L LA Hall (410), and F/O CM Campbell, Adjt of 410 Sqn. Internment was made in Exton Cemetary, Rutlandshire. At 1400 hrs, the funeral of F/O AE Raynor was held. An inspiring service was conducted by F/L Littlewood. Relatives of F/O Rayner came from London and attended as Chief mourners. Internment was made in Luffenham Church of England Cemetary.

No flying this week as all aircraft are being cleaned and readied for the weekend exercise. F/O CM Cambell visited The Rev Fielding, North Luffenham Anglican Church to obtain data for Grave Ledger Sheet on F/O Rayner. Also visited Exton and obtained similar data from Lord Gainsborough who owns the cemetary in which F/O JAL Kerr is interned.

Routine Day. No flying. Weather overcast and dark. Not conducive to good flying conditions. F/L Prince, F/O Found, F/L Gill and F/O Campbell proceeded on TD to Skegness, Lincs, where they attended as Crown Witnesses at the inquest concerning the deaths of F/O Rayner and Kerr. Verdict of Accidental Death delivered by the Coroner Mr. Watters. Ground Defence programme still being continued for Pilots, small arms training and exercise in stalking which are proving very interesting and instructive to those participating. Letters of condolence together with full particulars concerning the ceremonies relevent to the burial of two ex members of the Squadron. Aircraft being scheduled to commence on or about 1300 hrs. on Sat 26, Apr 52.

Excellent weather prevails and good flying conditions other than the usual haze that seems to continually exist in the district of about 3 miles. OC 410 Sqn is in London attending a Conference. Air Commodore JA Easton Director of Armament, AFHQ Ottawa paying a visit to the squadron on an unofficial tour of the area. Ground Defence programme still being continued by the Pilots and airmen that can be spared.

26 - 27 Apr 1952

Combined flying exercises in conjunction with various RAF Squadrons were carried out. Although the weather was not totally suited for flying, several sorties were executed and found successful. The aircraft appearance and serviceability was high as all previous to this date has been spent in cleaning and effecting maintenance problems.

28 Apr 1952

Excellent weather - high rate of serviceability which permitted considerable flying being carried out under such ideal conditions. Trade Test exams being conducted for Airmen who are eligible. Nothing of importance to report except that flying spurted out with great force - morale has regained its high level prior to our recent fatalities and the Sqn is functioning very successfully. The Sqn really rolled up the flying hours today and flew a total of 40 hours roughly. No night flying operations.

29 Apr 1952

An exercise scheduled today against a force of B-29 (USAF) bombers and fighter aircraft in affiliation. Excellent weather prevails, only a heavy haze over the drome to abour 2000 ft. Anticipated that heavy sun will gradually warm these moist areas and eliminate the haze. Excellent weather all day and pilots of both Sqns were out in full on flying. A large group of USAF privates from Shepherds Grove visited the unit and were given an air demonstration of the F-86 Sabre by F/L D Kelly. It was an exceptionally fine demonstration of flying. OC S/L Hall, Acting C Ops O and Station Commander for the Day in absence of W/C Davidson.

Visit from Captain Fink and Captain Nichols of USAF Bentwater - Discussion with CArmO on armament harmonization. Another excellent day - ideal weather conditions and pilots of both sqns made full use of the good weather. The total hours totalled for the month amounted to 336.40. A considerable drop but due to the fatalities and ceased flying of F/O Lauzon the flying personnel were reduced. Two professors of Leicester College delivered addresses on Current International Affairs to the Officers and Airmen. Mr. Hookham spoke to the Officers on the "The Schuman Plan" and a Mr. Bishop on Canadian and World Current Events. These lectures were arranged by the Departments newly created Bureau of Current Affairs in Ottawa, in which it is attempting to keep Canadian servicemen informed of various national and international events.

1 May 1952

At 0800 hrs the sky was filled with heavy overcast and slight showers continued periodically all morning. Only routine flying operations carried out during the morning. However, during the afternoon, considerable flying was carried out as the weather improved greatly and was conducive to good flying operations. Several RAF Officers and airmen visited unit and were shown the operation of the F-86 aircraft.

2 May 1952

Visit from Mr RC Crack of Kodak Technical Advisory Staff - re photo planning, equipment, cine-guns, and magazines. Heavy overcast encountered all during the day interspersed with slight rain. However local flying was carried out and in the afternoon a combined exercise with the two Squadrons was executed with other RAF Units in the Eastern Sector for familiarization and tactical affiliation. Arrangements being completed by Squadron Adjutant to effect the installation of the temporary wooden crosses on the graves of the late Flying Officers JAL Kerr and AE Rayner. A total of 24 aircraft of the two Squadrons participated in the affiliation exercise.

5 May 1952

Heavy overcast and continuous rain fell all day. Aircraft were serviceable for large scale exercise which was planned but which did not materialize due to poor weather conditions. However, an aircrew fitness programme, (paper chase) was held in the afternoon which was of considerable interest to those assessing excess weight. A North Star arrived from Canada on a Training Flight from 4 OTU Montreal. Passengers included several officers from 439 Sqn who came as personnel seeking flying information and general local conditions. Several (3) Flight Cadets under contact Training arrived from Canada for useful employment.

6 May 1952

Clear and sunny during the morning, however after 1300 hrs considerable overcast and rain. During the morning, towed target gunnery exercises were conducted. This is the first towed target exercise undertaken so far. W/C RTP Davidson towed the target and the two Squadrons engaged in air-air gunnery exercises. It proved very successful. Official copies of photographs were despatched to the parents of the late Flying Officers AE Rayner and JAL Kerr. Erection of temporary wooden crosses and completion of grave ledger sheets will finalize funeral action for these Sqn members.

7 May 1952

Clear, cool but considerable cloud. Sunny intervals. CO's parade held with Acting CO W/C RTP Davidson taking the salute. The appearance, deportment and discipline of 410 Sqn personnel have greatly improved. Information received that scheduled Escape and Evasion Exercise in May has been cancelled due to the critical increase of Foot and Mouth disease amongst cattle. Felt that the tramping of the personnel could easily assist in the spreading this disease. No flying carried out in AM. Officers and airmen attending lectures on Current Events which Mr. Hickman of Leicester College spoke on the Schuman Plan and Mr. Bishop of the same college spoke on the problems associated with the West Indies. These lectures are proving of considerable interest to all personnel. Pilots engaged in aircraft recognition programme on which an examination is being conducted in June. Aircraft engaged in PM in Battle formation flying and test flights. S/L P Harrison of RAF Farnborough visited OC and discussed various technical matters of the F-86 a/c.

8 May 1952

Clear and fine with overcast at 30-40 thousand feet. High winds were evident but did not deter local flying operations to be carried out by both Sqns. A/C KBB Cross, Sector Commander, Eastern Sector visited the Sqns and discussed plans and other matters with OC on operation "Fabulous" which is scheduled for 9th May 52. A confidential briefing was conducted by A/C Cross for all 410 F pilots at 1045 hrs. Weather has the appearance of impending rain and thunder. F/L RP St. John and F/O Joy proceeded on TD to USAF Base Bentwater on armement liaison duties.

Excellent weather for flying operations. Operation "Fabulous" scheduled for today. Take-off scramble scheduled for 0900 hrs but delayed until 1130hrs. Exercises were successful. Twelve aircraft of this Sqn participated.

F/O D Broadbent proceeded by Sabre a/c on TD to RAF Chevnor where a Sabre F86E is to be on a static display. Weather good, but dark and rainy around noon. Routine flying operations carried out. At 1530 hrs. a wing of 16 a/c led by W/C RTP Davidson were scheduled to take off for RAF base at Wensdorf (BZ) Germany on a cross continent familiarization flight. This was later cancelled. S/L R Harrison from RAF Farnborough was given a check out on handling and operation of Sabre F-86E. Night flying was scheduled but cancelled due to the extended continental flight. Mr. Payne, Foreman (Works) and Mr. Blake, Cost Accountant both from Airwork Limited visited this unit to discuss with the C Tech O the work load that will be assigned to Airwork regarding inspections and modifications to Sabre a/c when applicable.

13 May 1952

Excellent weather conditions and CAVU - no wind - clear and very warm. Interception trials being held with Sabre and Meteor a/c to determine what are more maneuverable. Air-Ground gun firing exercises at Holbeach are scheduled today and with good conditions the exercise should be good. W/C Davidson and F/O McEwan went to Furstenfelbruk, Austria USAF base on a routine flight. Results of Holbeach air-ground firing were not successful. "B" Flight engaged in night flying operations from 2000-0100 hrs. His excellency Archbishop Roy, Chief of the RC Chaplain Services accompanied by his aide and S/L JP Davignon visited the unit and chatted with the Airmen of the RC faith.

Favourable weather conditions and air-ground firing exercises at Holbeach carried out. A Flight of 8 aircraft from 410 F Sqn and a similar number from 441 F Sqn were scheduled to leave on a continental familiarization flight to Weindorf, Germany. Such a movement was approved by 12 Group but not by Fighter Command HQ. Trip was cancelled.

15 May 1952

Weather conditions favourable and local and routine flying carried out. Ground mist prevented aircraft from engaging in air-ground firing exercises at RAF Holbeach. F/L HWD Prince proceeded on TD to Air Ministry, London, to attend a conference with the Standardization Committee. Sabre a/c 19155 was the first a/c from their Wing to be transported by road to Bristol Aircraft Limited. Transportation was undertaken by 58 MU RAF.

16 May 1952

Weather beyond all expectations. Skies clear, somewhat misty but CAVU unlimited. Temp 80 degrees F. A number of Officers and airmen proceeding on annual leave today including 2 Officers from 410 F Sqn. Early morning routine flying in local areas carried out. In the afternoon air-ground firing exercises at RAF Holbeach. F/L Doyle, F/O Doyle, F/O Johnson and F/O Cinnamon conducting affiliation and battle tactics with Meteor versus Sabres at RAF West Raynham. W/C ER Taylor, RAF Fighter Command reported in and was given operating instructions on the F-86E. Posting for F/L RP St. John to attend 2 year course at University of Michigan in Guided Missiles received. His ETD is proposed by air to Canada on 27th May with F/O TB Lauzon who is posted to AAS Trenton on FTS course. 1 Chipmunk aircraft from number 3 BFTS Derby crashed approx. five miles south of North Luffenham, further details not available at the presnt. This unit supplied two guards for crash.

Beautiful sunny weather. Much golf and sun-bathing took place. A Hard Times Dance was held in the Officers Mess Saturday evening. Great Success.

19 May 1952

Beautiful weather continuing. Flying held up temporarily for DI's to be completed. Flying commenced and continued on throughout the day. A Navigation Trip was carried out by six aircraft to the Isle of Wight. Visit by F/L L Poulin of AMC, Aircraft Procurement Section, to discuss F-86E Sabre spares situation. Remained at this unit one week.

20 May 1952

Flying commenced - first detail 8:45. New American Type Flying suits and gloves were made available to all the pilots. In the afternoon serviceable aircraft were held for an interception at 1400 hours. Visit by G/C Verner of AFHQ/AMT Branch accompanied by S/L Y Hoye, Specialist Officer for Sabre a/c from AMC. S/L Hoye remained four days discussing Sabre maintenance policies with various sections of the Technical Wing.

21 May 1952

The CO's parade was held on the tarmac at 0800 hours this morning. No flying carried out but F/O Sylvester presented some aircraft recognition material. The fourth and final lecture was given on the Schuman Plan in the Station Theatre. All pilots attended. Word was received that four aircraft were to make the trip to Wunsdorf - F/L Doyle, F/L Nichols, F/O Robb and F/O Knox-Leet. A Mess Meeting was held in the Officers Mess from 1300 hours till 1430 hours after which the Wing Commander gave a few words regarding these trips that are to be held to Germany. A Section of four aircraft and two single aircraft were airborne in the afternoon for one flight. At 1600 hours the formation of four took off for Wunsdorf. 410 Sqn Officers were handed a devasting beating in softball to the tune of 17-6 at the hands of the Corporals.

Excellent weather prevailed for flying conditions. Routine local flying operations.

27 May 1952

S/L D Warren reported to 410 F Sqn and will assume command of Sqn vice S/L LA Hall who leaves for Canadian Air Division HQ. Paris 5 June 52. Handing over certificate completed and nil descrepancies to May 30 in major equipment. F/L MF Doyle proceeded on Instrument Course at RAF West Raynham. Accomodation at dispersal hangar inspected by S/L D Warren and a crew preparing it for habitation in coming month. F/L Lauzon and F/L St. John departed by air for Canada on services a/c of 426 Sqn. Excellent weather, excellent flying conditions prevailed and routine flying carried out. F/O Gibson, F/O Bentham, F/O Morrison and Lewis proceeded by Air on a Continental Navigation Flight to Furstenfeldburg, Austria. It is assumed they will be absent 24 hours. A Group of Air Cadets were conducted on a tour of the unit by Deputy ACLO F/O D Broadbent. A Group of American Army and Air Force Officers & enlisted men visited unit and were taken on a tour of the Sqn and shown the Mechanics of the Sabre Aircraft.

28 May 1952

Excellent flying conditions. A group of 17 pilots and NFL Officers proceeded by Viking a/c to Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough, Hants, England, where they were conducted on a tour by S/L Harrison and W/C Calnan. It was a most interesting visit and very enlightening. Four Officers returned from Continental air navigation flight to Germany. Only routine flying operations were carried out.

29 May 1952

Another excellent day but only routine flying test carried out. The Sqn accumulated a total of 510 flying hours for the month which is exceptionally good. The opposing Sqn 441, was less 100 hrs. The airmen met O/C S/L LA Hall and bade him farewell and best regards on his new assignment in Paris. Air Vice Marshall FG Wait and G/C TC McNabb visited the unit and conducted an open forum for airmen in the unit cinema. A British War Correspondent gave a lecture and film display of warfare in Korea. Armament section moved to its new location in dispersal area. In the evening a Cocktail Party was tendered S/L & Mrs. Hall in the Officers' Mess and was attended by all Members of the Squadron with their guests. All personnel are exceedingly regretful to see the departure of S/L Hall. He was a grand OC in every meaning of the word.

30 May 1952

An overcast day and as the Sqn had achieved a high flying total, a majority of the servicing Sqn and allied trade personnel are given a day off prior to the Witsun Holiday. No flying carried out and the air of the impending holiday is very evident. F/L Prince departed for Kinloss, a servicing crew following 31 May 52, to prepare for the arrival of Sabre aircraft of Operation Leapfrog.

Operation "Fabulous" commenced. Preliminary instructions conducted by F/O A Shepherd. Aircraft crews, aircraft and pilots of 410 Sqn fully conversant with the operation and plan put into effect.

9 Jun 1952

Operation "Fabulous" continued today. Pilots detailed to participate in exercise were available. Mediocre weather conditions and considerable overcast existed. However, in the afternoon it cleared considerably, and those off duty were excused duty. A gagle of 24 a/c paid a visit to RAF Kinloss and OC inspected RCAF Detachment there waiting for 439 Sqn from Canada. Sqn gradually settling down in its new location. Although conditions are unique from that encountered in No. 1 Hangar, it is fact that the matter will in time subside and the aspect of the Squadron acting as an operations will be realized more keenly. Visit by AVM Trinder DGE of Air Ministry regarding Supply problems related to the Sabre a/c.

Excellent flying conditions, CAVU unlimited. Air-to-ground firing exercises carried out at RAF Holbeach. Considerable improvement in the scores noted. Exercise "Fabulous" still in progress and stand by duty pilots detailed at 0418 hrs on a sortie. Gunnery harmonization trials were carried out by the Squadron section. S/L D Warren reports that conditions at RAF Kinloss are excellent and morale is satisfactory. Detachment waiting arrival of 439 Sqn from RCAF Goose Bay. OC attended a short conference at Wing HQ. G/C EB Hale, Station Commander, expected back from Korea where he has been for the past seven weeks on a familiarization tour of the Korean theatre of War with the USAF.

Exercise "Fabulous" still being observed and crews ready on immediate standby. Excellent flying weather prevailed in the morning but heavy overcast infiltrated our flying area. No flying carried out by the Sqn as all aircraft are grounded for special aircraft inspection. CO's parade held. Individual squadron drill. A very interesting lecture on current events "South Africa" was conducted by Mr. J Bishop of the Leicester College. It was attended largely by airmen but proved very interesting. Armament harmonization trials being conducted by Sqn armament section. A North Star of 426 Sqn Dorval arrived from Canada on a routine flight. No new personnel or any information on the arrival of 439 Sqn yet received.

Excellent day for flying and local routine flying carried out. Armament harmonization trials carried out. OC in routine flight over North Sea and hydraulic system failed. No difficulty experienced except considerable embarrassment. Operation "Fabulous" still in effect. The Sqn has completed its first week at dispersal and conditions although somewhat "rough" are gradually being gracefully accepted. F/L Littlewood Prot. Chap. visited the squadron on a routine official visit. No comments.

Operation "Fabulous" ends at sundown. Routine flying carried out. Conditions at RAF Kinloss satisfactory and RCAF Detachment awaiting arrival of 439 (F) Sqn from Canada. At present the Squadron is in Blui West Greenland awaiting favourable weather. North Star aircraft of 426 Sqn arrived from Canada with passengers and freight.

A 12 Group exercise was scheduled for 410 and 441 Sqn Pilots today. Due to inclement weather it was cancelled.

15 Jun 1952

Another command exercise scheduled for today but due to inclement weather it was cancelled. Two North Star a/c attached to operation "Leap Frog" reported in from Kinloss. Members of RCAF Detachment at Kinloss returned off TD except S/L W Gill, who is finishing finalizing matters. Aircraft and pilots of 439 Sqn arrived before an excited gathering at 1830 hrs. The operation was a success and no incidents occured.

Cloudy, windy and cool. Although weather was rough, only local flying carried out in AM. Bomber affiliation exercises carried out at 1400 hrs with other USAF and FC Units. F/L W Prince and F/O CM Campbell were checked out on MT and awarded CAP 374. OC busily engaged as President of Board of Inquiry re accident to Sabre 19189 piloted by S/L A MacKenzie OC 441 Sqn. Electricians visited unit and installed fixtures and circuits at dispersal HQ. F/O R Knox-Leet engaged in completing details for Sqn Party at Dispersal Smoke Room on 17th June 1952.

17 Jun 1952

At 0900 hrs 16 a/c from 441 and 410 Sqn participated in a Bomber-Fighter affiliation exercise with Meteor a/c from RAF Horsham St. Faith Wing. It was a practice interception and passed very successful. Ground Defence programme going along nicely. An informal visit was made by ex S/L H Woodward ex OC of 410 (F) Sqn in 1942-1943. He discussed old days 410 Sqn with the pilots and was shown around the Squadron. At present Mr Woodward employed by Shell-Mex Co Ltd. A very enjoyable squadron smoker was held for all squadron personnel at dispersal. This was the first opportunity the new OC had to informally meet the airmen of his Squadron. He addressed them briefly. An enjoyable evening was had by all.

18 Jun 1952

Overcast, cold for summer but to be expected due to weather conditions elsewhere in England. High wind is blowing. Intermittent sunshine. Early morning flying operations consisting of Bomber and Fighter affiliation with Horsham St. Faith. Operation a success. S/L Warren gave the pilots a brief discussion on GCA landings. The afternoon was taken over for sports which 441 and 410 Sqns pilots faced another game of softball and 441 Sqn became the victors. A lecture on the organization and set up of NATO was held in the Officers Mess. It was given by Professor Freedman of University of Toronto.

High wind, ovecast but acceptable for flying. Sunny intermittent periods. Routine local flying carried out. S/L Warren departed for North Weald to attend a reunion of ex RAF, (Regular) and Royal Norwegian pilots who were associated with him during the World War II. Electricity being installed. Nothing of importance to report except that the serviceability of a/c is good and pilots are losing no time to afford themselves of all flying possible.

Weather still cool, high wind and overcast. Sunny periods. Routine Bomber and Fighter affiliation test. F/L GH Nichols had a "C" class crash on Sabre 19175 when nose wheel gear door failed to remain closed whilst in flight. During an operation it flew open. Technical failure - no personal injury. Armament firing trials on the butts. Volunteers are being asked from 410 Sqn personnel for 2 Fighter Wing in France. Replacement pilots due in daily.

24 Jun 1952

Another overcast day, cool and hazy with intermittent sun. Routine formation flying carried out. F/L LJ Bentham had a "B" category crash on a/c 19156. His a/c caught fire in starboard forward ammunition bay. He forced landed in usual manner at aerodrome. Technical failure. Mock attack exercise by jet bombers executed by jet fighters of this Sqn against city of Rotterdam, Holland. Eight of our a/c will participate. CO of Station G/C EB Hale delivered an excellent address covering his tour of duty with Fifth Air Forces (USAF) in Korea. It was attended by AM Sir Basil Embry AOC in C Fighter Command and other senior RAF and RCAF Officers. In the evening a formal dining in event was held at which the guest was 439 Sqn. A very excellent evening and programme was held.

25 Jun 1952

Warm, overcast, hot wind and excellent flying conditions. Pilots were not engaged in flying as aircraft being prepared for another combined NATO exercise over Amsterdam. The first exercise on the 24th was a success and was of great value to the pilots. CO's parade held on the tarmac at 0800 hrs. No inspection held. A lecture on current events was held for all Officers and the Sgts Mess at which Mr. Bishop of Leicester College discussed South African problems. In the afternoon the squadron stood down as it was sports day. Combined exercise for the two Sqns went into effect at 1800 hrs with briefing and take off at 1800 hrs.

A hazy, warm day. Nil flying operations carried out in the AM. Trade Test Boards convened and personnel of 410 Sqn being processed. Average serviceability of aircraft. Green endorsement recommended for F/O Bentham for his ability in averting the loss of a Sabre aircraft. Bomber affiliation carried out with attacks on a B-50 USAF aircraft. All squadrons now engaged in operational tactics for the Wing.

Excellent flying weather. Bomber affiliation and also Fighter affiliation with Horsham St. Faith. OC attended conference (CO's) at which numerous matters concerning personnel for 2 Fighter Wing were discussed. CO had an open forum in the NAAFI to explain the terms of service for personnel of "Fighter Wing".
